Directory services play a critical role in ensuring computer networks are properly secured and efficiently managed. While Linux machines running in Microsoft Windows networks can interoperate with Active Directory, configuration is complicated - especially for administrators lacking Linux expertise. Managing authentication between Windows and Linux systems just got easier. Linux systems, as shipped, include support for Kerberos, LDAP and other security/authentication protocols, but don't typically come ready to perform single-sign on Linux by buying specialized, proprietary software. It is possible to partially implement Active Directory-based single sign-on on Linux systems without any additional software. . Red Hat Tuesday said it is offering a new training course, designed to improve the security skills of users. The course, called RH423 Red Hat Enterprise Directory Services and Authentication, will cover directory services, authentication and security configuration for companies running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (RHEL 3), Red Hat said. The course will be part of the Red Hat Security Curriculum, within the Red Hat Certified Engineer program. It will teach advanced methods for configuring Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and Kerberos (a secure method for authenticating a request for a service in a computer network) on RHEL 3 servers. "For 18 months, we have been working on a portfolio of courses to give more advanced and specific training for people in an enterprise situation," Jasmine Huxtable-Wright, Red Hat training manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said Tuesday. Convergence and security concerns will drive enterprise directory services adoption (2002+), reinforcing the need for identity management (2002-04). NOS upgrades, strong authentication, and higher demands for identity management will drive increasingly complex integration of multi-vendor/platform directory instances (2003+), resulting in more use of EAI-like integration "toolkits." Full leverage of secure enterprise infrastructure integration will lag until 2004+, due to application platform and network complexities as well as standards adoption rates (for example, security APIs). Identity authentication will remain the primary use of directories through 2006. Greater directory integration and management demands will drive eventual convergence with database platforms and services (2006+). Web services are not a new idea, but interest and initial use of such services are rising sharply. The idea of having a loosely coupled, language-neutral, platform-independent way of linking applications within organizations, across enterprises, and across the Internet is compelling. The threats to a directory are many, and if appropriate safeguards are not maintained, a company may not even know when a directory has been compromised. The primary threats include theft, destruction and alteration of information (including user privileges). The potential result of a data loss or alteration ranges from the merely embarrassing, to the libelous (if competitive information is exposed), to the expensive (if the company is held liable for the exposure). Even less-sensitive breaches can have an enormous impact on consumer confidence in a company if the exposure is public (such as a cracker defacing a corporate Web site). .
