DHCP Dynamics and High-Availability Solutions by Nominum

DHCP is now a key potential point of failure for many organisations, said Nominum as it introduced version 2 of its high-availability Dynamic Configuration Server (DCS), which it claimed can provide over 2,400 DHCP leases per second, 59 times more than a widely used open source equivalent. DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is the scheme that automatically assigns IP addresses within a network. . "A weak DHCP service means people can't get online, or it takes time," said Albert Gouyet, Nominum's marketing VP. He added that as more and more devices rely on IP - for example IP phones - existing DHCP servers may find it hard to keep up and could become unreliable. A particular problem is how long it takes to reboot the server after making changes, as users may be unable to get online during this period. In our saga that began several weeks ago, we're trying to create a firewall setup that allows no inbound access by default that can be modified remotely to allow a small window of inbound SSH connectivity. Remember that this machine must have no inbound TCP ports accessible to pass muster with the Windows-biased IT administrators, yet we want to allow inbound SSH dynamically when needed.[1] So the trick was to find a way to dynamically allow inbound SSH access from 'authorized' machines. Since the machines he was going to be connecting from were Windows machines with almost no useful software[2] it was a bit of a trick to find something simple. Using our 10 minute firewall setup, we had already effectively blocked inbound SSH because the initial SYN packet would always be discarded.[3] What we needed was a simple way to allow those inbound SYN packets for a short window. . This document is designed as an introduction on how the Sentry Firewall CDROM works and how to get started using the system. The Sentry Firewall CD is a Linux-based bootable CDROM suitable for use in a variety of different operating environments. The system is designed to be configured dynamically via a floppy disk or over a network. This allows one to configure the system dynamically, eventhough much of the actual system is on read-only(CDROM) media. There are several advantages of using a CDROM based system in various security related environments. The main system is centered around the ramdisk; a compressed file system image which is loaded into RAM at boot time. Any changes to the ramdisk image are temporary, and will be undone upon the next reboot. Furthermore, the ramdisk, kernel, binaries, etc, related to the operating system are kept on read-only media(CDROM). This means that if the security of a box running a CDROM based system is ever compromised the attacker can at best own the box until the next reboot. So there is no real threat of having to go through the tedious task of rebuilding and hardening the system after a successful attack is discovered. The link for this article located at Stephen A.
