Effective Email Filtering with SpamBayes for Better Management

Spam email is the plague of the 21st century; SpamBayes is its cure. This client-side application analyzes all incoming email messages and automatically sorts out those that are unwanted. SpamBayes digests the contents of email messages and counts how often certain words -- e.g. Viagra -- occur in spam (bad) or ham (good) messages. Based on these word patterns, it calculates an overall score that rates a message as spam, ham, or unknown. You can manually classify unknown mail as spam or ham and SpamBayes will learn accordingly. . The SpamBayes classification sorts out virtually all spam messages and almost never produces a false positive -- that is, a good message wrongly identified as spam. Only once have I had to fetch an email from the junk mail folder. This happened when a Spanish friend wrote me, presumably because Spanish messages are rare in my inbox. I corrected the wrong classification, and all her subsequent messages were recognized as good. The program improves precision with each manual correction. SpamBayes can be run as an Outlook plugin under Windows or as a POP3 or IMAP proxy under Windows, Linux/Unix, and Mac OS. The link for this article located at Newsforge is no longer available. . Effective Network Protection Against Spam for Enhanced Security

Because the Internet is open to the world, a network left unprotected to spam is a houseboat with the basement door left open.Spam accounted for 64 percent of the e-mail messages processed by Brightmail in May . . .. Because the Internet is open to the world, a network left unprotected to spam is a houseboat with the basement door left open. Spam accounted for 64 percent of the e-mail messages processed by Brightmail in May 2004, while Postini processed 78 percent for the same period. Our own internal logs show that up to 87 percent of incoming messages (including worms and viruses) are flagged as undesirable. No matter how you slice it, the majority of all e-mail sent today is junk. The costs for transporting and processing this junk is high. Say a user at an average company gets 30 legitimate e-mail messages per business day, this user presumably would receive about 70 junk messages per day. At an average transfer size of 3 KB per message and 22 working days per month, each unique recipient could receive almost 5 MB of undesired data each month. For an organization with 100 employees, that's as much as 500 MB of Nigerian money scams or strangers intent upon enhancing your love life, all of which has to be transferred and stored. Effective Spam Management Using Bayesian Filtering Techniques

Spam e-mail has become an ever increasing problem, and these days it is next to impossible to use e-mail without receiving it in large amounts. Various techniques exits to combat the problem; keyword-based filters, source blacklists, signature blacklists, source verification and combinations of these to name a few. All of them have problems; keyword filters needs to be constantly updated manually and are not very accurate; blacklists also need to be constantly updated, and will always lag behind spammers. Fortunately, just as we seemed to be losing the war on spam, a new technique appeared on the scene after a paper by Paul Graham: Bayesian filters, our last, best hope for spam-free inboxes. Without going into details on how they work (more information can be found here and here), they are based on statistical methods which gives a probability for an e-mail belonging to a given class (usually just two classes are used; spam and not-spam, but this is not a limitation of the technique, and indeed, POPFile supports an arbitrary number of classes). The beauty of bayesian filtering is that the filter can be trained by each individual user simply by categorizing each received e-mail as either spam or not-spam; after the user has categorized a few e-mails the filter will begin to make this categorization by itself, and usually with a very high level of accuracy. If the filter makes a mistake, the user re-categorizes the e-mail; the filter learns from its mistakes. No complicated maintenance is required after the filter is installed; it's so easy even grandma can use it. The link for this article located at Kristian Eide is no longer available. . When we finished, he started checking his other messages. All of a sudden, there was DeeDee, a voluptuous vixen in a plunging red tank top and Daisy Duke shorts, smiling sheepishly from the computer screen. I stared at her for a moment, then at my son. He blanched and raised his hands as if he were in a stickup. "I swear! I don't even know the woman!" he said, in Clintonesque denial. There was a tense second or two, until I remembered that the same thing had happened to me countless times when I was innocently checking my e-mail.
