Cyber risk is increasing for individuals and organizations, making flexible and robust solutions for identifying spam and malware increasingly critical. Apache SpamAssassin is an anti-spam framework we stand behind and have been using in Guardian Digital EnGarde Cloud Email Security for decades as a component of our email security solution to help detect fraudulent and malicious mail. . The KAM ruleset for SpamAssassin is a set of rules developed by the McGrail Foundation . It has been in active use and development since May 2004 and significantly improves the performance and efficacy of a stock installation of Apache SpamAssassin. The foundation is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the KAM ruleset, underlining its long-standing support of the project. In celebration of this exciting accomplishment, we sat down with Founder and ruleset author Kevin McGrail to discuss the significance of the KAM ruleset, how it has evolved over the past two decades, and future plans for the ruleset. In addition to this exclusive coverage, you’ll learn how using the ruleset can improve the security of your email to protect against known and emerging threats. . The KAM ruleset stands as a crucial framework enhancing email security, addressing the dynamic nature of cyber threats through advanced algorithms and machine learning.. Chris wrote in and mentioned a talk at Auscert which highlighted that (Sender Policy Framework) SPF would have helped in the instance of an intrusion and suggested a diary outlining some of the things that can and can't be achieved using SPF. . I have my own experiences with SPF and the effectiveness, but I'd like to hear you experiences with SPF, good or bad. so I can write a more complete diary on the topic. For those that are not familiar with SPF. The idea behind it is to create a DNS entry that specifies those machines in your network that are allowed to send email from your domain. The receiving mail server checks this record and if it does not match it will drop the message. There is a little bit more to it, but hat is the crux of it. So if you have had any experiences with SPF (good or bad) please let me know via the contact form or directly markh.isc at gmail.com. Thanks Chris for the idea and thanks in advance for your contributions. I'm aiming to get a diary out on this later this month. After years of narrow focus on fighting spam, messaging security vendors are branching out in new directions as corporate customers demand more from them than filtering unwanted e-mail. At the same time, this crowded industry is overripe for consolidation, and experts believe only those companies with the technology and deep pockets to satisfy growing customer demands will be left standing. . Messaging security vendors face a dilemma; they must stay focused on blocking spam, viruses and other nasty code flooding corporate e-mail streams. But as spam and virus blocking become check-list items instead of purchase drivers, vendors looking to stand out are adding new features ranging from encryption and policy enforcement for outbound messages to new product lines that protect communications other than e-mail, such as instant messaging or Web interactions. The MailFoundry Network Appliance is new and differently conceived anti-spam solution from Green Bay, WI-based Solinus, Inc. What makes MailFoundry different from most spam filters is that it relies on human input rather than automation to find spam, and what makes it very different is its low cost. "It takes the smarts of human beings to defeat human beings," says Solinus CEO David Troup, "Our human editors craft the filtering rules, and their objective is a zero per cent false positive rate." The company has team of "spam editors" constantly looking at spam e-mail message candidates to detect new spam patterns to add to the appliance's filters. How many editors does Solinus employ? "That's a trade secret," says Troup. An important target market for Solinus is the small and medium-sized business market. The hardware version of the product can be purchased for $2,995, with a $499 annual subscription fee to keep the filters up to date. Spam filters are updated "almost constantly" according to Troup. The more people who know your e-mail address, the more unwanted pieces of mail you receive. If you used your e-mail to register on some Web sites or publish a few articles in the newsgroup, you probably started to receive more unwanted messages than welcome ones. Fortunately, the users of Linux and other open-source systems have written a lot of good anti-spam filters. You can find dozens of these programs on GNU.org and Freshmeat. The anti-spam software may be sophisticated or simple, easy or difficult to use, more or less effective. Amidst the larger well-known projects, there is SpamAssassin, written by Justin Mason, and bogofilter, a Bayesian filter written by Eric S. Raymond, and others. Testmail, the filter discussed in this article, is a Perl filter of average size and moderate complexity. It checks e-mail messages available at the POP3 server, filters them according to defined rules and, depending on the selected method, sends messages to the local mailbox or removes them from the server. Testmail requires the Perl libnet, Net-Ping and Socket modules. The link for this article located at LinuxJournal is no longer available. . Spam has become a real problem these days. Chris Lowth submits In the world of almost daily outbreaks of Windows-focused viruses, it's nice to find the Linux can come to Redmond's aid. The "protector" project for Linux provides a software plug-in for sendmail that strips attachments that could (by nature of their type) contain viruses. It doesnt rely on signature files or regular updates but simply identifies executable attachments (and other undesirable types) and strips them from incoming mails. Protector follows a "pessimistic" paradigm and is suitable for small offices where the approach of stripping potential viruses at the risk of accepting a small number of "false possitives" is acceptable.
