AACS Breakthrough: Hacker Arnezami Compromises HD-DVD Security

A hacker claims to have discovered a cryptographic key that can be used to circumvent copy restrictions on HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies, reports Infoworld. The key is a further step toward undermining the next-generation AACS (Advanced Access Content System) encryption system used to copy-protect high-definition media, the article adds. The hacker, going by the name of Arnezami, said he discovered the key by examining what was happening in his computer. AACS is supported by media and technology companies such as Microsoft, Matsushita, Sony, Toshiba, The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. The encryption system is designed to be more robust than the CSS (content scrambling system) encryption scheme used by DVDs, which was completely cracked in 1999. New Linux Security Products Unveiled at InfoSecurity Conference

Beyond displaying an extensive slate of existing Linux products, vendors at this week's InfoSecurity show pointed to possible future offerings ranging from a Linux client for a CD-ROM encryption system to a Linux-enabled all-in-one device for securing both physical access and video surveillance. In a sign of the growing convergence between information security and physical security, the InfoSecurity conference was combined this year with the East coast edition of the ISC show, another perennial event at New York City's Javits Center. Conference sessions tended to skirt matters specific to OS and interoperability, focusing instead on convergence issues such as organizational restructurings and information sharing, as well as on what general types of tools to deploy against the latest nuances in bots, pharming, and other cyberattacks. . Swift Data Protection Leveraging Itanium Framework for Government Entities

Linux kernel maintainer Linus Torvalds has charged that Itanium designers "threw out all the good parts of the x86." One emerging niche for Itanium, though, seems to be high-speed encryption and decryption. For instance, encryption and key management provider Eruces Inc. of Lenexa, Kan., is bullish on Itanium. Eruces devotes a large chunk of its business to federal intelligence agencies. The company's symmetric key management system encrypts documents, programs and databases, using a centralized KeyServer to generate and manage keys. . EU Quantum Cryptography Initiative: $13 Million For Secure Communication

The European Union plans to invest $13 million during the next four years to develop a secure communication system based on quantum cryptography, using physical laws governing the universe on the smallest scale to create and distribute unbreakable encryption keys, project coordinators said today. If successful, the project will produce the cryptographer's Holy Grail -- absolutely unbreakable code -- and thwart the eavesdropping efforts of espionage systems such as Echelon, which intercepts electronic messages on behalf of the intelligence services of the U.S., Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. A quantum-key distribution and encryption system developed by Magiq Technologies Inc. and called the Navajo Security Gateway promises unbreakable encryption over existing fiber-optic lines. The crypto system will initially be available only to U.S. companies and agencies, the company said . "Navajo Security Gateway is the world's first commercial-grade quantum-key distribution system available now for use over existing fiber-optic cables up to 120 kilometers apart. It offers unbreakable quantum-key distribution as many as 100 times per second, plus layers of VPN [virtual private network] security and classically based data encryption," said Andrew Hammond, vice president of marketing and business development at Magiq (New York). In quantum-key distribution, an uncrackably secure key is transmitted, after which a normal encryption/decryption technique is used over standard fiber-optic lines. The key is chosen by a random quantum process rather than picked by a random number generator, thus avoiding the usual computational difficulty of cracking a typical encryption algorithm. BitArts, a company founded by a group of ex-computer software crackers, has developed a revolutionary encryption system they claim is all but unbreakable. John Safa, BitArt's founder and chief technical officer, told Newsbytes that the encryption system works by changing the data on-the-fly while it is in the memory of a PC. This means that elements of the program itself - which is used to encrypt and decrypt the required data - actually change within the PC's memory, making a disassembly of how the software works utterly impossible. The only way in which an encrypted data stream could be broken, he said, would be by using a brute force approach and stepping through every possible decryption combination possible until an understandable data string resulted.
