Google's User Data Sharing Policy And Its Impact On Freedom

In the spirit of being open, search engine outfit Google has stated under what conditions it will hand over data to governments or delete information on its websites.. David Drummond, Google's senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer insists that the outfit is sticking to article 19 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which says that "everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression". But he said that Google, like other technology and telecommunications companies, regularly receives demands from government agencies to remove content from its services. Drummond said that many of these requests are entirely legitimate, such as requests for the removal of child pornography. Google also regularly receives requests from law enforcement agencies to hand over private user data. He said that the vast majority of these requests are valid and the information needed is for legitimate criminal investigations. U.S. Security Expert's Lawsuit Against Japan for Censorship of Speech

A U.S. computer security expert is suing the Japanese government for violation of his freedom of speech, alleging they censored him at a recent computer security conference, the plaintiff said at a news conference on Monday. The lawsuit is the first of its kind in Japan, according to his lawyer. . . .. A U.S. computer security expert is suing the Japanese government for violation of his freedom of speech, alleging they censored him at a recent computer security conference, the plaintiff said at a news conference on Monday. The lawsuit is the first of its kind in Japan, according to his lawyer. A legal firm representing Ejovi Nuwere, chief technology officer of SecurityLab Technologies, filed a petition at the Tokyo District Court against the Japanese government on Monday for punitive damages of ¥30 million ($290,406) for violation of Nuwere's rights under Article 21 of the Japanese Constitution, according to Nuwere's attorney Tsutomu Shimizu. Clause one of the article guarantees freedom of speech, press, and all other forms of expression. The petition was filed following a claim by Nuwere that officials of Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) forced him to abandon a presentation he was to have given on Nov. 12 on security issues related to Japan's online citizen registry network, called Juki Net. Juki Net is a national network of databases that contain the names and personal details of nearly every person residing in Japan. It has been surrounded by controversy, particularly over its security. The link for this article located at infoworld.com is no longer available. . Exploring Technology's Impact on Civil Liberties and Surveillance

Technology is the ultimate chameleon, taking on the characteristics of its handler. In some hands technology is a tool of treachery, while in others it morphs into a peaceful protest. In still others, it represents the bleeding edge of freedom. . . .. Technology is the ultimate chameleon, taking on the characteristics of its handler. In some hands technology is a tool of treachery, while in others it morphs into a peaceful protest. In still others, it represents the bleeding edge of freedom. Technology is not the criminal here, but the war drums in Washington make it sound that way. "Law enforcement has not shown they were thwarted in efforts [to predict or stop terrorism] because they couldn't do something," Sherri Steele, executive director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told my colleague Bob Sullivan. "To say they didn't have tools they needed is jumping to a conclusion," Steele says. The link for this article located at MSNBC is no longer available. .
