Exploring GSM Hacking Tools Impacting Wireless Network Security

Well it looks like what happened to WEP all those years ago is going to happen to GSM now. The methods have been known, the theory is established but the breaking point is when freely available tools are published that makes it possible for anyone to perform the attacks even without really understanding what is going on.. The recent news about WPA2 being cracked generated a lot of discussion, mostly highly technical The link for this article located at Darknet UK is no longer available. . GSM Cracking Tool Kraken Reveals Security Risks in Mobile Calls

The Global System for Mobile Communications technology used by the majority of the world's mobile phones will get some scrutiny at next week's Black Hat security conference, and what the security researchers there have to say isn't pretty.. On Friday, an open source developers had released a GSM-cracking software that breaks the A5/1 encryption algorithm used by some GSM networks. Called Kraken, this software uses new, very efficient, encryption cracking tables that allow it to break A5/1 encryption much faster than before. The software is key step toward eavesdropping on mobile phone conversations over GSM networks. Since GSM networks are the backbone of 3G, they also provide attackers with an avenue into the new generation of handsets. The link for this article located at Tech World is no longer available. . Newly developed open-source tools have emerged capable of compromising A5/1 encryption, sparking significant apprehension regarding mobile security.. iPhone 4 Jailbreak Progress and GSM Unlocking Techniques

The hacker group known as iPhone Dev-Team apparently is close to unlocking iPhone 4 in order to run unofficial apps and to use other GSM cellular networks besides AT&T. . Unlocking the operating system, usually termed jailbreaking, lets the user further customize the phone and load and run applications apart from Apple's iTunes/App Store Web site. Unlocking the cellular baseband, sometimes called either a carrier unlock or a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) unlock, means the phone can accept a different SIM card to work on other GSM networks. Wikipedia has an exhaustive account of iPhone/iOS jailbreaking attempts and tools. Some bloggers, such as Mic Wright at ElectricPic.com, are already making their wish lists of jailbroken applications, which need a custom installer such as Cydia. Wright listed five: * Allowing Apple's FaceTime video chat to work on 3G cellular connections.* Support for 720p high definition video uploads, not just downloads.* Installing custom wallpapers and themes, changing iPhone icons, and so on, similar to the capabilities in Winterboard (iPhoneHeat.com has a Winterboard tutorial).* And an application to turn the iPhone 4 Wi-Fi adapter into a local hotspot, letting other devices attach to the iPhone and share its 3G connection to the Internet.* Wireless gaming controller to work with the Wii, Xbox 360 or PS3, exploiting the iPhone 4's new gyroscope. Gaining access to the iPhone 4 software via jailbreaking opens up personalization options and the ability to utilize alternative carriers.. iOS Unlocking, GSM Jailbreak, iPhone Customization, Dev-Team Hacks. . Chaos Communication Congress: GSM Encryption Cracked By Engineer

A German computer engineer said Monday that he had cracked the secret code used to encrypt most of the world. Nohl revealed his success at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, Germany. He said that 24 people worked independently to reproduce the code book, or binary code log, for the algorithm, which contains the equivalent of about two terabytes of data. He announced his intentions to crack the GSM algorithm at a conference in August. The link for this article located at ZDNet is no longer available. . A German technician has successfully decoded the encryption scheme employed in GSM telephone communications, exposing security flaws during the Chaos Communication Congress..
