Exploring Hacking's Emergence as a Competitive Cyber Sport

Is computer hacking a sport? Should it be rewarded with trophies, awards, and maybe even, jobs? A growing trend points to yes. What used to be a frowned upon and shady underworld of computer hackers is now emerging as a network of professionals that boasts teamwork and helps provide insight into the world of cyber security. . Bringing computer hacking out of the shadows and into the mainstream, multiple companies from app developers, security firms, and even the federal government have embraced. Many of these companies are hiring the folks they once considered a security threat, in an attempt to mine their experience and data to improve their own web privacy initiatives, as was the case when the Federal Trade Commission hired well known hacker Chris Soghoian in 2009. DefCon Capture The Flag Challenge: A Gripping Contest Among Elite Hackers

Capture the flag might be only a game, but it was serious business at DefCon, the world's largest annual computer hacker convention. For 36 straight hours, eight teams of experienced hackers and serious security professionals played predator and prey as they tried to hack into competitors' networks while defending their own. From my front-row seat as a member of the winning team, Sk3wl of R00t (hacker slang for "School of Root," where "root" refers to gaining administrator access to a system), I got a bird's-eye view of how new - and not so new - attacks could be launched and thwarted. Advertisement: Each qualified team playing the game - organized by a Seattle security community group called the Ghetto Hackers - controlled a pair of Windows machines running a variety of network and Web-based services that were connected to each other and a central scoring mechanism called the Scorebot via a Gigabit Ethernet network. Rest assured, this hacker network was not connected to the Internet. As soon as the doors to the secluded hacker playground disguised as a hotel ballroom were opened at 10 a.m. July 30, the air was tense in this crowded room. The game scenario and the legitimately purchased Windows images were presented to participants two hours before the official noon start time. How would you like to have to lock down two Windows boxes in just two hours as you started to recognize that there were world-class exploit developers in the room - and on your network? The results were posted on Defacers-challenge.com, showing Brazilian defacement crew 'Perect.br' as the clear winner with 152 points, more than double that of its nearest rival . But the Zone-H website, which keeps a record of hacking attacks and inadvertently found itself as the scorekeeper of the competition, criticised media interest in the challenge. "Nothing would have happened if the media didn't pay so much attention, turning a non-case into something useful to fill the empty summer newspapers," said the website. The Information Security Education Research Center (ISC) of the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) said Sunday that no hackers among the 3,664 teams worldwide managed to conquer its third level server and win in the First World Information Security Fair which was held from 9:00am June 27 to 9:00am July 1. As a result, Hackers' Lab, the company that managed the competition, chose the runner-up a team with the name "CRlab" since it managed to reach the second level security server before the game ended. CRlab was awarded US$20,000 prize money. The third place and US$10,000 prize money went to a team called "the best team for the olymfair," which was the first team to break into the second level server but was over taken by CRlab. The organizer, however, decided to give a US$10,000 special prize to a participant with the ID L@bman, who broke into the broadcasting server of the games and simulated conquering the third level server. Some 700 foreign teams from 21 countries participated in the competition but none of them made it to the finals. ISC researcher, professor Lee Kwang-hyoung said that the aim of the games was to attract powerful foreign hackers and see what their skills but that due to lack of promotion the number of foreign participants fell short from what they had expected.
