On Tuesday, hacker Samy Kamkar demonstrated a way to identify a browser's geographical location by exploiting weaknesses in many WiFi routers. Now, he's back with a simple method to penetrate hardware firewalls using little more than some javascript embedded in a webpage.. By luring victims to a malicious link, the attacker can access virtually any service on their machine, even when it's behind certain routers that automatically block it to the outside world. The method has been tested on a Belkin N1 Vision Wireless router, and Kamkar says he suspects other devices are also vulnerable. "What this means is I can penetrate their firewall/router and connect to the port that I specified, even though the firewall should never forward that port," Kamkar told El Reg. "This defeats that security by visiting a simple web page. No authentication, XSS, user input, etc. is required." The link for this article located at The Register is no longer available. . Small and medium-size companies last year spent more money on hardware-based firewall appliances than on software-based systems, helping WatchGuard Technologies Inc. remain in the No. 1 position in the most competitive segment of the firewall market, according to a new analyst report. The study by IDC, "Return of the Black Box: Firewall/VPN Security Appliances Unleashed," concludes that for the first time, firewall appliance revenue last year surpassed software-based firewall revenue, coming in at $942.8 million. Framingham, Mass.-based IDC is a subsidiary of International Data Group, which publishes Computerworld. In addition, Seattle-based WatchGuard won the top slot in the $1,000-to-$5,000 firewall appliance market -- the "sweet spot" in the market, according to IDC -- for the second year in a row. The company captured a 23% market share and earned $60.7 million in worldwide revenue. The link for this article located at ComputerWorld is no longer available. . And many of you have adopted firewalls to protect your internal network segments, servers, and workstations. Most of these solutions are software-based-you must load that software on top of an existing OS. The exceptions are dedicated hardware-based firewalls and routers with embedded firewall add-ons. Software-based firewalls are great tools, but some people argue that hardware-based firewalls are more effective because they're harder to tamper with. Another cited benefit is that hardware-based firewalls are standalone units that are less prone to interruption from services that often run on an underlying OS. In the final entry of a three-part series of firewall product reviews, Pawel Leszek looks at dedicated appliance firewalls based on Linux. "Fire and forget" is the main idea behind hardware firewall appliances like WatchGuard's Firebox II, the Raptor Firewall from Cobalt and Axent, the Phoenix Adaptive Firewall from Progressive Systems, and the T.Rex firewall appliance from Freemont Avenue Software. The idea is simple -- let's get some custom hardware and software, put them into one easy-to-install "black box" and write some software to manage the beast. The end user doesn't need to know what OS is inside, or how to install and configure the software. This approach can be useful -- you can install this kind of firewall in minutes and not worry about playing with installation, reading boring manuals, and so on. The hardware is customized for the software and the software is polished for the hardware. The only problem is that you don't really know how it works -- but intruders probably don't, either.
