Heartbleed Analysis Reveals OpenSSL Licensing Challenges to Engagement

Weeks after the OpenSSL debacle, the question still stands: Why did so few people show up to work on such widely-used and important code? Since the problem arose, funds have flowed in to fix it at the behest of corporate giants, but before the crises, few volunteers participated. One leading open source expert has suggested a reason: licensing.. An interesting comment from David A. Wheeler, an expert in government use of open source, asks whether the OpenSSL project's use of a rarely seen open source license was partly responsible for a lack of community engagement and oversight. In the context of a longer paper highlighting technical facets of addressing Heartbleed, Wheeler says: The link for this article located at InfoWorld is no longer available. . Heartbleed Bug: A Hacker's Contribution to Internet Security

Thank the hackers. This week's Heartbleed vulnerability has everyone running scared (see box below to read what you might do to protect yourself). The serious crack in the foundations of the supposedly secure internet was revealed earlier this week by a software engineer probing website security in his spare time. . He received a cash bounty for his work, which he then donated to the Freedom of the Press Foundation, an organisation that funds encryption tools for journalists. The idea of publicly rewarding people who discover bugs could greatly improve internet security. New Scientist spoke with Merijn Terheggen, CEO and co-founder of HackerOne, the platform through which Google's Neel Mehta received his $15,000 reward. . An ethical hacker earned a monetary reward for uncovering the Spectre vulnerability, improving online safety.. Understanding Heartbleed and Private SSL Key Extraction Risks

Below is what we thought as of 12:27pm UTC. To verify our belief we crowd sourced the investigation. It turns out we were wrong. While it takes effort, it is possible to extract private SSL keys. The challenge was solved by Software Engineer Fedor Indutny and Ilkka Mattila at NCSC-FI roughly 9 hours after the challenge was first published.. Fedor sent 2.5 million requests over the course of the day and Ilkka sent around 100K requests. Our recommendation based on this finding is that everyone reissue and revoke their private keys. CloudFlare has accelerated this effort on behalf of the customers whose SSL keys we manage. You can read more here. The link for this article located at CloudFare is no longer available. . Uncover the methods employed to retrieve private SSL keys via the Heartbleed vulnerability, alongside essential security measures to implement..
