Home and small office routers are critical to the security of the small networks connected through broadband and yet until quite recently they were barely talked about as a possible security vulnerability. Later this month I'll be canceling my subscription to a leading security suite that runs on two of my home-office PCs. I'll replace it with Microsoft's free Security Essentials, which I've been using on my notebook since I bought it two years ago. I realized several months ago that I simply no longer needed to spend money for the convenience of an all-in-one security app.. That got me thinking: Is there any software that the average PC user needs to pay for? Most of us bought our current operating system--usually Windows or Mac OS X--as part of the purchase of the computer itself. Do-it-yourselfers have Linux as a free-OS alternative. The programs we use for work, such as Microsoft Office and specialty apps like Adobe Photoshop or Intuit's Quicken/QuickBooks accounting software, are likely provided by our employer. (People who work from home and/or for themselves have to buy their own software, but they can at least write off the cost of the programs they use in their work.) When you look in your closet, do you see a pile of obsolete hardware that you just cannot bring yourself to throw out, despite the pleas of your family? If you want to share your home Internet connection and save a little money at the same time, dust off that old hardware and set up a Linux-based firewall. All you need is a 486 or better processor, two network adapters (only one if you're on dial-up), a switch or hub, diskette drive, and 12MB of RAM. In this article, we'll take a look at floppyfw and Coyote Linux, two free, open source projects that have shrunk Linux down to diskette size to implement a firewall. . Both floppyfw and Coyote Linux provide adequate protection for home or small office use. So which is right for you? Floppfw takes a minimalist approach that requires you to understand iptables in order to customize it. Its lack of remote administration could be seen as an advantage for both resource-constrained and security-conscious users. Running SSH or a Web server takes up memory and processor resources that could be used to support more users. It is also one less source of potential vulnerabilities. Those familiar with Linux and command-line administration will feel right at home with floppyfw.. When evaluating network security options such as Floppyfw and Coyote Linux, both provide solid defense for home or small business settings. The key question is: which one to choose?. Even if you run your business from a spare bedroom, hackers and computer pranksters from around the world are probably trying to break into your computer systems. Sound implausible? Well, it's not. Some may simply send a virus on the Internet that will debilitate your computer systems. Others may break into your network to scour your computer records for valuable information on your customers, including social security, credit card, and bank account numbers. I never considered the possibility that my personal finance Website for women, might attract the interest of hackers, until the Chinese language edition of Elle magazine ran a small article on it. Then I watched in amazement as traffic to my site poured in from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Now, don't get me wrong, I like publicity as much as anyone does, but I was concerned my site might be in jeopardy. Several weeks earlier, I heard a report on National Public Radio that Chinese techies might retaliate for the April 1 collision between a U.S. spy plane and Chinese fighter jet off the coast of China, which caused the Chinese plane to crash and the death of its pilot. This part of the article gives an overview of ways to use your DSL machine as gateway for your home or office network, and goes through the basic steps to setup and maintain security to machines connected directly to the Internet. With NAT (or "IP masquerading", as it's called in another universe), multiple machine can be hidden behind one gateway machine. The machines behind the gateway can use their own, private network numbers (usually form the 10/24 or 192.168/16 subnets), and the gateway will translate the private, internal addresses to the public, external address of the gateway machine (hence NAT => Network Address Translation, see Image #3). Any replies made to requests sent out will be translated before sent back to the client. One of the characteristics of this scheme is that a client machine needs to establish a connection, and no outside machine can connect beyond the NAT gateway. From the security point of view this is absolutely desirable. From a practical view, it might be needed to forward single ports to inside machines, e.g. to let them handle WWW or FTP requests. The two best things about those fast Internet connections you get from cable, DSL, and ISDN are that you don't have to dial a number to connect to the Internet, and they are also easy to share over a network. That's also the worst thing about them--the Internet's a two-way street, and when you've got always-on access to the Net, the Net has the same access to your hard disk. And as for networking... well, that presents its own set of problems, especially in the telecommuter home office and the satellite corporate bureau.
