Visiting a website certified with an SSL certificate doesn't mean that the website is not bogus. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protect the web users in two ways, it uses public key encryption to encrypt sensitive information between a user's computer and a website, such as usernames, passwords, or credit card numbers and also verify the identity of websites. . Today hackers and cyber criminals are using every tantrum to steal users' credentials and other sensitive data by injecting fake SSL certificates to the bogus websites impersonating Social media, e-commerce, and financial websites as well. In addition to usual checks at UK border controls, from 30 November, 2009 overseas nationals arriving in the country will have their fingerprints scanned.. All passengers with biometric UK visas, entry clearances and identity cards for foreign nationals will undergo the new procedure. "The purpose of these checks is to verify that the individual entering the United Kingdom is the same person who gave their biometrics when they applied for their visa, entry clearance or identity card for foreign nationals," said the UK Border Agency in a statement. Sweaty hands might make you unpopular as a dance partner but they could someday prevent hackers from getting into your bank account. Researchers at Clarkson University have found that fingerprint readers can be spoofed by fingerprint images lifted with Play-Doh or gelatine or a model of a finger moulded out of dental plaster. The group even assembled a collection of fingers cut from the hands of cadavers. . In a systematic test of more than 60 of the carefully crafted samples, the researchers found that 90 per cent of the fakes could be passed off as the real thing. Identity thieves and impersonators thrive on publicly available personal information and data pilfering. Now that information, along with some bogus data on would-be fraud victims, is being used against the thieves in an identity verification scheme from StrikeForce Technologies. . StrikeForce markets its VerifyID "quiz" to organizations that take applications for financial and other services over the Internet. Founder and Executive Vice President George Waller said that VerifyID goes beyond the usual name, address, and phone number to verify applicants' identities. It asks as many as nine questions derived from more than 22 billion public records -- and some bogus information. "We ask red herring questions -- we make up information and ask about information only the user would know," Waller said. "The engine mixes the answers and data and asks in a way only the true user would be able to answer.". When 65 percent of your sales are online, credit card fraud can put you out of business. Companies are fighting back with tough security measures, policies, and new products. . . .. When 65 percent of your sales are online, credit card fraud can put you out of business. Companies are fighting back with tough security measures, policies, and new products. At least once a day, solution provider CompSource finds itself the target of a ripoff artist. In fact, Dean Bellone, founder and CEO of the $12 million, 13-year-old Cleveland-based company, has been targeted so many times he now considers himself a fraud expert. The way Bellone sees it, if, like CompSource, you do about 65 percent of your sales over the Internet and you want to stay in business, you'd better learn how to outfox the bad guys. "If every one of those hit, we wouldn't be here," he said. "A lot of companies hit by these scams end up dying off. It's very discouraging." What's also troubling to Bellone and other solution providers is the sharp spike in credit card fraud and Internet scams they've seen in the past year. A CRN Online Quick Poll last week found that 82 percent of all solution providers surveyed are seeing an increase in credit card scams and Internet fraud. What's more, 49 percent said these practices are up more than 100 percent in the past year. Solution providers are fighting back with tough security measures and new policies for their sales reps, including refusing to ship out of state or out of the country. They're also turning to a new class of vendors that offer identity verification products and services. The link for this article located at securitypipeline.com is no longer available. . A steady stream of passengers handpicked by AMR's American Airlines showed up yesterday at a sectioned-off area of National Airport's baggage claim to submit to the scans, present two forms of government identification and fill out a form that will be used to perform a criminal background check. . . .. Steve Daniels leaned forward for a machine to take a photo of his eye, then placed his right index finger on a small digital scanner. Instantly, a large black and white image of his fingerprint appeared on a screen. The image wiggled slightly as Daniels moved his finger. "Wow!" he said. Within seconds, Daniels, a computer consultant whose company is based in Annapolis, joined 125 other local travelers who signed up yesterday to become "registered travelers" at Reagan National Airport. The test project, which aims to give frequent fliers a quicker pass through security checkpoints, is already underway at four other airports. It relies on the latest biometric technologies to verify a passenger's identity with increased precision. Digital fingerprint scans and photographs are already used to identify foreigners traveling on a visa, and U.S. officials plan to encode a facial recognition technology into passports. "It was fun -- it was also a little weird," said Mark Senak, an Arlington resident who signed up for the program yesterday and said he had never had his iris scanned. In today's world, communication has broken all previous time and distance limits. Now you can talk with someone in real-time no matter how far away he is. That advantage has also brought some major problems with itself. First, it is hard to verify other persons identity with 100% certainty and second, we can't know if there is a third party between who reads our correspondence.
