Efficient Techniques for Old Backup Tape Disposal in Data Management

Peggy Jones, a business manager for the information-management team at the College of Southern Maryland, was asked recently to help dispose of what she now estimates were about 1,200 old backup tapes and cassettes her IT organization had been storing in a relatively well-fortified walk-in vault. . The issue of what to do with the old tapes came to a head when renovation was scheduled for the building where the vault resided. "We had already moved to another backup system. So, these old tapes didn't work in our current system anyway. Now it was just old data we needed to figure out how to dispose of properly," Jones says. Defense Department IM Policy Implementation For Enhanced Security

The Defense Department is unlikely to have any instant messaging scandals similar to the one that embroiled Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.). In the armed forces, misuse of online chatting doesn't just run the risk of personal embarrassment; it. The service scrubs hard drives automatically to remove any unapproved downloaded software, he said. Also, the Army has blocked Internet ports that route traffic from sites that provide IM services. EPA IT Systems Security: Improved Operations Achieving Top Ranking

Even with the renewed scrutiny being given to government IT systems in light of the recent laptop theft at the Department of Veterans Affairs, officials working with the Environmental Protection Agency say the organization has significantly improved its security operations. . Guided by a seven-year contract granted to services provider Computer Sciences Corp. in 2002, the EPA maintains that it has applied a systemic approach to maturing its security operations, resulting in the agency being one of only five federal organizations that received a top ranking in a recent security scorecard issued by the House Committee on Government Reform. A privacy bill that's pending in Congress could have significant IT ramifications for U.S. companies, since passage of the bill would require them to give customers access to personal information they have collected. For firms without centralized databases of that information, compliance would likely be expensive, critics warn. Companies such as Marriott International already have to provide access for their customers in Europe, where such laws are on the books now. If a European resident wants data other than what's available on the Marriott Rewards Web site, he must pay the company's special $20 privacy-policy charge for a personal data request. The company's U.S. privacy policy doesn't include this access provision. That fee doesn't cover the cost of providing the data, said Stephanie Hampton, a spokeswoman for the Bethesda, Md.-based hotel chain. Assembling the information may require the help of a systems analyst, and "you can easily assume that $20 is a lot less than what they make an hour," she said. The Privacy Amendment Act was put forward at the end of last year to ensure that the personal information kept by the private sector was both secure and accessible to individuals. But with a deadline of December this year, are companies ready or aware of what's needed to comply? At a roundtable discussion in Sydney last week with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), the issue of what would be needed to get businesses to comply to the new amendments was a primary concern. The general feeling from PricewaterhouseCoopers seemed to suggest that the issue of privacy was not merely about complying with regulations and legislation but was more about engaging in solid business practices The link for this article located at ZDNet AU is no longer available. . "The idea that privacy and security might be symptoms and not the problem emerged from a recent Webmaster focus group discussion with the Office of Personnel Management on defining Webmaster classifications. We worked through the usual issues of defining technology Webmasters and content Webmasters. As we moved from the discussion of specialists to the issue of World Wide Web managers, an interesting perspective emerged from our discussions. Anecdotes and informal surveys are showing that about half of the Webmaster community works in mission-oriented program offices, which are not information technology organizations."
