7 Common Mistakes New Linux Users Make And How To Overcome Them

Learning Linux can be a frustrating experience where everything little thing feels like a battle. Avoiding these common mistakes will make your introduction and adoption of Linux much easier and less stressful. . Using Linux is much simpler than it used to be, but it can still confound new users. It has long held a reputation as being difficult to set up and work with, but that’s no longer the case. Gone are the days when you had to struggle to tell your newly-booted installation what keyboard layout you had, using your misidentified and incorrectly-mapped keyboard. Modern installation routines such as Calamares and Ubiquity make installing the common Linux distributions as simple as it can be. A first-time user might be thrown by questions about partitioning and file systems, but accepting the defaults should always yield a working Linux system. Linux is also much better at identifying hardware during the installation. It’s very rare occurrence nowadays that a fresh install doesn’t boot at all. In fact, the pain points I hear about are very rarely related to installing Linux. The link for this article located at How-To Geek is no longer available. . Installing RouterOS 2.9 on Compaq Proliant 400: Key Features and Setup

Would you like to have a Linux-based router capable of doing tasks such as stateful firewall inspection, virtual private networking, and traffic shaping, in addition to packet routing? Tired of having to do administration from the command line but want to be able to administer your box from a Windows-based client PC? MikroTik's RouterOS may what you need. You can boot RouterOS via diskette, CD, or over the network via PXE or Etherboot-enabled network interface card. You can find a full list of RouterOS technical specifications at the homepage. . I installed the 13MB ISO CD image RouterOS v2.9.23 on a old Compaq Proliant 400 (450MHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB hard disk). The software's minimum configuration is a 100MHz Pentium, 64MB RAM, and 64MB storage. When I booted the PC, I found a list of available packages for RouterOS, including the packages to use DHCP and PPTP servers, Web proxy, and much more. You can select individual packages, all available packages, or the minimum required packages. To see the full range of what RouterOS was capable of, I selected all. After a last warning about the data on the disk being erased, the software is installed. The link for this article located at Linux.com is no longer available. . I revived an old Compaq Proliant 400 by installing RouterOS v2.9.23, a rewarding journey of setup that deepened my networking knowledge and skills. Cool Dad! the Internet's on all the time A few years ago, I had cable broad-band Internet access installed in our home. The cable modem was connected to my Windows 2000 Professional desktop system through a 10baseT (RJ-45) Ethernet card. This computer was also connected to our second computer running Win98SE, located in my Daughters room. This connection was a 10base2 (RG-58 coax) network with 10base2 Ethernet cards in each computer. The Win2k system was setup for Internet sharing (ICS) and routed the 2nd computers IP traffic from the network over to the cable modem. Life was good. High-speed broad-band access at home. No more complaints about busy phone lines. Lightning fast downloads. Dad! the Internet's not working Everything worked fine until I got the urge to frag a few Bots in Unreal Tornie or race a Porsche 911 in Need-for-Speed. Exit NT and boot-up SE. I've had little luck running my dual CPU SMP Win2k workstation as a gaming platform. Who wants to tie down a Win98 gaming system with IP routing duties. Internet sharing also required my workstation to be turned on for a good part of the day. The link for this article located at Neville Stead is no longer available. . There is a standard list of reasons why you might want to consider the use of encryption to ensure the privacy of your business and/or personal data. In the Resources section below, I've provided links to half a dozen sites, each explaining why such protection is a good thing. Recently, however, I came upon another good reason. It has nothing to do with the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government's chronic attempts at encroachment of privacy. Instead it is the corporate world's attempt to do the same. A good policy is to mix and match the best to form a security grid that should be difficult enough even for the expert cracker to penetrate. The various IDS systems of interest to us throughout this series will be purely Tripwire and Snort. Before even installing Tripwire let me walk you through the whole 'LOGICALL process of Installing, Configuring and using Tripwire.
