Juniper Networks announced today it has bought virtual security vendor Altor Networks for $95 million. The acquisition builds on an existing relationship between the two companies, and Juniper actually invested in the company earlier this year. . Founded in 2007, Altor specializes in intrusion prevention, firewall and monitoring for virtual environments. With the purchase, Juniper seeks to deliver integrated, scalable security architecture protecting physical and virtual systems. "Juniper is excited to acquire one of the industry's leading virtualization security vendors and the extremely talented team that built it," said Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager of Service Layer Technologies at Juniper Networks, in a statement. Just three weeks before Microsoft Corp. publicly details plans to create a secure operating mode for Windows PCs, two top cryptographers have raised concerns about Microsoft's approach . Whitfield Diffie, a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems Laboratories, said an integrated security scheme for computers is inevitable, but the Microsoft approach is flawed because it fails to give users control over their security keys. Ronald Rivest, an MIT professor and founder of RSA Security, called for a broad public debate about the Microsoft move. Microsoft first tipped its plans, formerly code-named Palladium, about a year ago. Since then some details have emerged about the concepts for what Microsoft now calls the next-generation secure computing base (NGSCB, pronounced "enscub"). There's no question that remote workstations require protection from the increasing security threats present today. When a remote user connects to the corporate network via a VPN, a hacker gaining access to the remote computer could also potentially enter the corporate network as an authorized user. If a remote computer is compromised, it could also inadvertently carry malicious code--such as viruses, worms, Trojans, and spyware--into the company networks. These threats are prompting many CIOs to consider VPNs that combine personal firewalls with additional security features. In response to growing hacker threats, personal firewall vendors are partnering with security companies that specialize in dealing with malicious code. For example, Zone Labs, which sells the commonly used personal firewall ZoneAlarm, resells in a bundled package several additional security products, like PestPatrol software, which scans for worms, Trojans, and other nonviral malicious code. Many tech leaders are also considering using new solutions from traditional antivirus vendors like McAfee and Norton, who sell both a personal firewall and virus-scanning software.
