Linux has long been considered the underdog of the desktop operating system world; however, Linux adoption is now improving at a rapid pace. . Many of these people pointed to the gaming support in the Linux world, while others claimed that no matter how much is improved, Linux would never replace Windows simply because it lacks the familiar approach that’s making Microsoft’s operating system the preferred choice for so many users out there. But the most recent statistics show that the adoption of Linux is improving at a really fast pace, and while it’s still far from overtaking Windows, all these numbers suggest that sooner or later, choosing an operating system doesn’t just come down to Microsoft and Apple products. While Linux has gradually improved its market share in the last few years, a more notable growth has been experienced in 2020, and the month of May brought a new personal record in this regard. There's a cartoon that made the rounds in the Linux community a few years back that I often think of at this time of year. In essence, it depicts a Linux aficionado refusing to help convince someone to switch to Linux, explaining, "If everyone's using it, I'm not cool anymore.". It's a joke, of course, made funny by the fact there may just be the tiniest hint of truth underlying it, at least among some people. The reason I think of it at year's end, though, is that mainstream adoption of Linux is generally considered a goal by many in the free software community, and it's an oft-cited hope for every new year. There are, of course, numerous critics who say it will never happen, at least on the desktop. I disagree. Either way, however, it's fun to think it through, in both a serious and a not-so-serious way: What if everyone ran Linux? The link for this article located at PC World is no longer available. . Three of the world's biggest electronics companies--IBM, Sony and Royal Philips Electronics--have joined forces with the two largest Linux software distributors to create a company for sharing Linux patents, royalty-free. The Open Invention Network (OIN), as the new firm unveiled on Thursday is known, could mark a breakthrough in resolving how to protect vendors and customers from patent royalty disputes resulting from freely shared Linux code. . If OIN's approach to managing intellectual property wins acceptance, it could overcome a big stumbling block to wider corporate adoption of Linux and pose challenges for major opponent Microsoft, which has argued that relying on "open source" software poses legal risks. OIN is funded by the world's largest computer company, IBM, two consumer electronics giants--Sony of Japan and Philips of the Netherlands--and Linux distributors Red Hat and Novell. Market researcher IDC estimates that the worldwide Linux business will grow 25.9 percent annually, doubling from $20 billion this year to more than $40 billion by 2008. If patent risk is lifted, Linux use could accelerate at an even faster rate, said Richard Doherty, an industry consultant with Envisioneering Group of Seaford, N.Y. "In 2002, about two percent of the county's computer servers were Linux", Robinson recently told reporters from the Modesto Bee. "This year, about one-quarter of the servers are Linux. That number is expected to increase to more than one-third by next year." Robinson also said that "he expects the county will save money in the long run by moving to Linux because it won't have to pay software licenses every year, which nickel and dime you to death and can be very costly".
