Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 SP1 Brings Linux Support for VMs

Microsoft head Steve Ballmer has promised to add Linux support for the first time in one of its products because, he explained, users need to manage heterogeneous networks. Support for the software giant's open-source rival and greatest threat will come in Virtual Server 2005 Service Pack 1, due to ship by the end of the year, Ballmer said as part of his keynote speech at the company’s annual summit. . "We will add support for non-Windows virtual machines running on our Virtual Server, including Linux," he said. "Virtualisation is an area of intense interest and activity for us. Driving virtualisation is a key technology to facilitate better compatibility and lower total cost of ownership." Ballmer also said Microsoft would use its Dynamic Systems Initiative to become an "enterprise management vendor" and deliver tools that let users extract management intelligence from their network nodes regardless of vendor. He also joked about his "no-show" at last year’s Management Summit, when he had to cancel his keynote after being called away to meet with the European Union, which eventually fined the company $613 million. Understanding Linux Server Security Challenges And Management Tools

Today news sites repeated the monthly Microsoft execute says "Linux is insecure" articles. And while they are comparing apples with eggs (as Linux distributions ship with far more servers and network services than Microsoft offers), it's hard to deny the fact that Linux is also insecure. Essential and security critical packages like OpenSSH, LSH and OpenSSL had exploits in the last weeks and this should have convinced the last conservatives that it is not possible to write a complex server in C without having a remote exploit per year. All these exploits were caused by manual memory management that is relatively hard to avoid in C. But that's not even the point that I want to make, you can also have security problems in other languages. What free software (and also the proprietary competition mostly) lacks is a way to make securing your computer easy. Let's assume a somewhat experienced user wants to find out which TCP/UDP ports are open, reconfigure all servers to accept only local IP addresses and otherwise shut the service down. In an ideal world the user could use some administration GUI to get a list of all ports that are open, with a user friendly service name (not the path of the binary!) for each port. Then the user right-clicks each of them and selects "Configure this service", a configuration GUI for the service appears and the user does the neccessary configuration. Guardian Digital Launches EnGarde Secure Professional For Enhanced Security

Start-up Guardian Digital has launched an effort to sell a version of Linux that's less vulnerable to attack, a niche the company hopes will gain it a foothold in the market for the Unix-like operating system. The Allendale, N.J.-based start-up released its EnGarde Secure Professional product Tuesday, a version of Linux that comes with management tools and server software designed to thwart attacks. The product costs $549, plus $219 per year for a mandatory software update service. Linux, like the Unix operating system on which it's based and other operating systems, has had its share of security problems, but often the problems come with higher-level software such as the SNMP service for letting administrators manage servers or the Apache program for sending Web pages to browsers. Guardian Digital aims to stomp out many of those problems by what software is used, testing it with the other software and in some cases writing new programs, said Chief Executive Dave Wreski.
