Facebook Introduces One-Time Passwords For Public Access Securely

Moving to enhance online security, Facebook on Tuesday said that it will soon offer users the ability to receive one-time passwords on their mobile phones and that it has already enabled the ability to sign out of Facebook remotely.. "[W]e're launching one-time passwords to make it safer to use public computers in places like hotels, cafes or airports," said Facebook product manager Jake Brill in a blog post. "If you have any concerns about security of the computer you're using while accessing Facebook, we can text you a one-time password to use instead of your regular password." As IT staffs continue to look for ways to stretch their security budgets, vendors are readying new products that combine multiple security functions in a single offering. Nokia Corp. and Broadcom Corp. next week will introduce products that take discrete capabilities normally found in several different devices or applications and weave them together. Although the companies take different approaches, the goal is the same: to reduce the number of security devices IT staffs have to manage. Nokia's Internet Communications division this week plans to introduce its Secure Access System, a line of appliances based on the Espoo, Finland, company's software security platform and IPSO hardened operating system. The boxes are designed to provide security functionality that allows remote and mobile users to access corporate networks. The heart of the system is an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)-based VPN (virtual private network) that provides a connection to all of a user's corporate applications, including e-mail, client/server software and enterprise applications. While companies . . . . The proliferation of Internet technologies has helped fuel the telecommuting wave with its mobility and connectivity needs, but it's been a double-edged sword as that very mobility has increased security threats to networks from dial-up and wireless access. While companies have been busy--if not always terribly effective--instituting E-security measures to block external threats to their Web sites, mobile systems that access corporate systems are largely unprotected. This has dangerous implications as more employees take to the road with their handy notebooks and personal digital assistants. The rise of digital communications has not only enhanced remote work opportunities but has also heightened risks related to cyber threats.. E-Business Security Report: Mobile Threats and Outdated Models

In its report E-Business Security: New Directions and Successful Strategies, Ovum argues that the traditional hierarchy of trust adopted by organisations does not fit the ebusiness model, meaning that access channels, such as mobile devices, could pose a major security threat. Graham Titterington, senior Ovum analyst and lead author of the report, said: "The old security model tends to rely on perimeter security - protecting the outer boundaries of the organisation. But that is based on a hierarchy of trust which places 'internal' users at the top and 'external' users at the bottom. An approach designed to keep people out of systems is no longer adequate. Recent study uncovers that traditional security frameworks are inadequate for safeguarding online enterprises against escalating dangers, predominantly arising from mobile connectivity..
