Senforce Technologies has released its Senforce Portable Firewall Plus (SPF+) for mobile devices. The software takes control of laptop computers at the network level, enabling users to shut off wireless connectivity, control access to hotspots and ensure computers are equipped with the latest virus protection. SPF+ is based on the same key technologies found in the Senforce Enterprise Mobility Manager: AccessAware, LocationAware and Quarantining. Unlike its big brother, SPF+ takes some of the decision-making out of the hands of users. The link for this article located at Ed Sutherland is no longer available. . Introducing WLAN Security Solutions for Enhanced IT Control and Compliance

As Wi-Fi standards get sorted out and customers clamor for better security, two vendors this week are set to introduce WLAN security products that give IT staffs greater power and flexibility in locking down their networks. Offerings from AirDefense Inc. and Funk Software Inc., while differing in approaches, address the main problems plaguing wireless LANs: policy compliance and interoperability. The Wi-Fi world is a morass of rivals, each promoting its own platform while supporting different authentication and transmission standards. 802.11b is the current standard for WLAN, but 802.11g--with its higher data transmission rate--is gaining ground. And not far behind is 802.11a, which operates in the 5GHz spectrum. Most WLAN security tools monitor only 802.11b traffic. But AirDefense 3.5 can monitor all three types of traffic and has upgraded management and policy-compliance capabilities. The policy tool gives managers a side-by-side comparison of the configuration of any access point and the company's mandatory configuration. The tool can be used to issue commands via SNMP to take corrective action during attacks. Customers can change the channel for an access point or shut it down from a central console, said Jay Chaudry, chairman and CEO of AirDefense, in Alpharetta, Ga. Although SNMP monitoring looks easier, it lacks resolution at the IP address and TCP/UDP port level. Also, if the amount of requested MIB entries is big, it can generate high usage loads on the CPU in the monitored devices. On the other hand, flow-based accounting, standardized on Cisco's NetFlow data export format, allows a great degree of flexibility and fine granularity, while having low CPU levels on network devices. What makes flow-based accounting more attractive is that data can be obtained not only from many vendors' switches and routers, but also from Linux and other UNIX routers by using ntop's NetFlow export plugin. With this method, you don't even need a router to collect and report your network traffic information. The link for this article located at LinuxJournal is no longer available. . A California company has quietly attached its software to millions of downloads of the popular Kazaa file-trading program and plans to remotely "turn on" people's PCs, welding them into a new network of its own. Brilliant Digital Entertainment, a California-based digital advertising technology company, has been distributing its 3D ad technology along with the Kazaa software since late last fall. But in a federal securities filing Monday, the company revealed it also has been installing more ambitious technology that could turn every computer running Kazaa into a node in a new network controlled by Brilliant Digital. Navigating Security Trade-Offs Within Modern IT Ecosystems Today

Digital security is a trade-off. If securing digital data were the only concern a business had, users would have no control over their own computing environment at all-the Web would be forbidden territory; every disk drive would be welded shut. The . . . . Digital security is a trade-off. If securing digital data were the only concern a business had, users would have no control over their own computing environment at all-the Web would be forbidden territory; every disk drive would be welded shut. The current compromise between security and flexibility is a sort of intranet-plus-firewall sandbox, where the IT department sets the security policies that workers live within. This allows workers a measure of freedom and flexibility while giving their companies heightened security. That was the idea, anyway. In practice, the sandbox model is broken. Some of the problem is technological, of course, but most of the problem is human. The model is broken because the IT department isn't rewarded for helping workers do new things, but for keeping existing things from breaking. Workers who want to do new things are slowly taking control of networking, and this movement toward decentralized control cannot be reversed. . Digital security is a trade-off. Win2000 Security Review: Progress After One Year and Future Challenges

A year later, many security companies have had the chance to examine Win2K in detail. And hackers have had their shots at cracking it. So how have Redmond's promises of improved security stood up after this gimlet-eyed scrutiny? Surprisingly well. While plenty of security flaws have been discovered in Win2K, experts say they're less serious than past holes. And very few have been of the variety that allows intruders to take full control of a computer network remotely -- doomsday for any company that sells software. What's more, the new security features, which do everything from give systems administrators more control over who can do what on a network to vastly improved password encryption, have given Microsoft a solid base to build on. "In a nutshell, Microsoft has stepped up to the plate big-time," says Joel Scambray, managing director at Internet security consultancy Foundstone.
