Linux Wi-Fi Exploits: Five Security Issues Patching Soon

What appeared to be one simple Linux Wi-Fi networking security problem was soon revealed to be five different nasty Wi-Fi security problems. Fortunately, the patches are on their way. . You may recall that Linus Torvalds recently added support for Rust in the Linux kernel . One of the big reasons for adding Rust was to put an end to Linux code memory problems . It can't come soon enough. Recently, five serious Linux Wi-Fi security holes were uncovered . . Several critical vulnerabilities in Linux-based Wi-Fi systems have been identified, prompting the development of solutions to enhance the safety of your wireless networks.. D-Link DIR-890L: Identical Security Patch for Network Threats

As mentioned in an update to my post on the HNAP bug in the DIR-890L, the same bug was reported earlier this year in the DIR-645, and a patch was released. D-Link has now released a patch for the DIR-890L as well.. The patches for both the DIR-645 and DIR-890L are identical, so I The link for this article located at devttyS0 is no longer available. . Tor Network DoS Attack: Impact on Underground Marketplaces

The operator of an underground marketplace hosted within the Tor network has reported a flaw in Tor that he claims is being used for an ongoing denial of service attack on the site. . The problem, which is similar to one reported by another hidden site operator in December on the Tor mailing list, allows attackers to conduct a denial of service attack against hidden sites by creating a large number of simultaneous connections, or "circuits," via Tor, overwhelming the hidden service's ability to respond.. An exploit targeting vulnerabilities in I2P is leveraged for launching a denial of service attack on clandestine markets, compromising their accessibility.. Samba Critical Update: nmbd Daemon Security Flaw Announcement

The latest in a recent series of updates to the Samba file system software fixes a critical vulnerability that could allow an attacker on the local network to take control of a host running a vulnerable version of the Samba nmbd NetBIOS name services daemon.. Samba is an open source implementation of the SMB/CIFS network file sharing protocol. SMB/CIFS is most famous as the protocol used in file sharing over Microsoft Windows networks, and Samba exists largely for non-Windows interoperability with those networks. nmbd is a server component of it which responds to NetBIOS requests over IP networks, associating NetBIOS names and IP addresses. A significant Samba patch resolves security flaws in SMB/CIFS, bolstering both network integrity and file transfer functionalities.. Samba Patch, File Sharing Security, Network Update. . Cisco: Critical Advisory on IOS Flaw Attack Surface and Mitigation

A bug discovered in an operating system that runs the majority of the world's computer networks would, if exploited, allow an attacker to bring down the nation's critical infrastructure, a computer security researcher said Wednesday against threat of a lawsuit. Michael Lynn, a former research analyst with Internet Security Solutions, quit his job at ISS Tuesday morning before disclosing the flaw at Black Hat Briefings, a conference for computer security professionals held annually here. . The security hole in Cisco IOS, the company's "infrastructure operating system" that controls its routers, was patched by Cisco in April, Lynn said, and the flawed version is no longer available for download. But Cisco didn't want the information disclosed until next year when a new version of the operating system would be out of beta testing and ready for distribution. The link for this article located at Wired is no longer available. . A critical vulnerability in Cisco's IOS could lead to attacks targeting essential systems; updates have been released following the public announcement.. Cisco Systems Inc. has found a serious vulnerability that can be used to essentially disable virtually any device running the company's Internetwork Operating System software, including its ubiquitous routers and switches. The vulnerability arises from IOS' failure to correctly handle a specific series of IPv4 packets sent to the device. When the sequence of packets hits the device, the IOS mistakenly flags the input queue on the network interface as being full. After a period of time, the device will stop processing traffic. The device can be forced to stop routing any traffic on any interface and will require a complete restart to resume normal operation. In this column, we look at buffer overflows in ircd, ePerl, MIT Kerberos 4 and 5, ascdc, and slrn; temporary file problems in MIT Kerberos 4 and 5, the GNU C Library, and the Athena widget libraries; other problems with proftpd under Debian, Midnight Commander, Cisco Aironet 340 Bridges, and man2html; and a discussion of loopback devices and multi-homed routing. Some operating systems when configured with two or more network interfaces (multi-homed) will deliver packets received from a network interface to the loopback interface. This is a not a bug in the TCP/IP stack of these operating systems. It is an unexpected result of following the applicable Internet standards. Systems that this affects include FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD. It is not clear which Linux configurations, if any, are vulnerable. . Buffer overflows pose serious vulnerabilities in computing, particularly affecting applications like ircd and libraries such as glibc, leading to severe system issues.. Almost a third of UK companies experience a complete network crash at least once every 12 weeks, according to a new study. A quarter of companies say they've lost critical data because of virus attacks, and 16 per cent say that, in the last six months, they've had to take their network down to sort out a severe virus problem. The survey, carried out by research firm Vanson Bourne, was sponsored by Network Associates. Vanson talked to 120 network managers in large UK organisations in both the private and public sectors. The main problem seems to be email viruses, with only 34 per cent of respondents feeling completely satisfied that their current antivirus measures are sufficient to rebuff such attacks.
