Saying that the internet was something that “people gathered around as a common idea without a top down authority,” his research – done with colleague Rodrigo Colli – found that the “most active actor in cyber space is states doing things – attacking – and [conducting] attacks against other states and other groups.” The link for this article located at InfoSecurity is no longer available. . Recent Data Breaches in Online Services and Their Trust Implications

Every time you turn around another company is reporting a serious data breach. Last week it was the LastPass online password management service that lost some e-mail addresses and master passwords, as CNET's Seth Rosenblatt reported in The Download Blog.. A couple of weeks before that, hackers broke into the servers of German software maker Ashampoo and made off with many of its customers' e-mail addresses; Elinor Mills provides details of the attack in her InSecurity Complex blog. But these losses pale in comparison to the data breaches reported last month by e-mail service provider Epsilon and the ongoing saga of Sony's PlayStation Network. Erica Ogg examines the most recent attack on Sony's PSN in her Circuit Breaker blog. The link for this article located at CNET is no longer available. . Microsoft's Criminal Compliance Handbook Takedown Affects Cryptome.org

Long-established privacy and cryptology website Cryptome.org was pulled offline on Wednesday after Microsoft launched a legal offensive over its publication of Redmond's guide to internet wiretapping.. Microsoft's Global Criminal Compliance Handbook, a 22 page booklet designed solely for police and intelligence services, provides an overview of Microsoft's online services, what information it collects on users and how long it keeps it. The guide also explains how to serve warrants and how to make sense of the records it stores to understand, for example, when and to who a Hotmail user sent an email. Redmond's lawyers used the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in an attempt to force Cryptome to pull the guide, a request it refused, before going to hosting provider Network Solutions. The firm not only complied with this order but went one step further by placing a lock on the Cryptome.org domain to keep the site down. Cryptome.org remain unavailble but the site, minus the controversial Microsoft documents, can still be found at cryptomeorg.siteprotect.net. Enhancing Public Access with Federated Identity in e-Government

Leading public sector IT bosses have told silicon.com they would welcome moves by the UK government to adopt federated identity in order to provide the public with faster, more efficient access to online services. But one expert believes the government has been too preoccupied with the controversial ID cards project to consider such as solution. . Federation would essentially mean government departments would share the public's identities across their systems and authenticate against one another. This would speed the process of signing in and using multiple online services and would eliminate layers of administration. Richard Steel, head of ICT at London Borough of Newham, gave such a system a ringing endorsement. "I see it as the way forward," he told silicon.com. The link for this article located at silicon.com is no longer available. . The collaboration would optimize service delivery by facilitating information sharing among agencies, improving citizen engagement.. Following the recent DoS attack on the US-based Computer Emergency Response Team, experts warn that there is no defence -- and the problem can only get worse. For security experts, the CERT attack and a similar series of May attacks of the main White House Web site, Whitehouse.gov, underscore the Net's lack of preparedness for handling what could become a catastrophe. Thousands of attacks happen each week. Savage co-authored a paper published last week that found that at least 4,000 denial-of-service attacks happen each week. The potential damage from such attacks rises as increasingly critical services are being put online. The link for this article located at ZDNet UK is no longer available. .
