According to our recent Security Staffing survey, IT security executives believe their organizatons are in greater jeopardy due to staffing shortages than their peers that oversee corporate security. Additionally, IT uses flex time and training as a motivator more so than corporate security executives. Corporate security organizations outsource more than IT security departments and the most frequently outsourced positions were security guards and guard management, while IT security were more likely to outsource data back up and biometrics. . Our study asked about both corporate security staffing issues and also IT security issues. The results shown here are based on the responses of 218 security professionals. Fifty-two percent of respondents had responsibility for IT security while 22 percent were in charge of corporate security. Twenty-six percent had responsibility for both. The news follows an announcement that India's software industry is now the country's single biggest source of export revenue, accounting for revenues of nearly $13bn (£7bn). . . .. However, last week's move by Lloyds TSB's group union, LTU, to take legal action against the bank for breach of the Data Protection Act (DPA), is just one of a number of things sparking fears in India of a potential slowdown in outsourcing growth. A new study, however, predicts a shift in spending toward security services that will balloon that market to more than $20 billion by 2007. Framingham, Mass.-based International Data Corp. is predicting the worldwide market for security services to be $23.5 billion by 2007, which represents a 20.9% annual growth rate. IDC includes a wide range of things under "information security services" in its analysis, including: professional services; consulting; integration and implementation services; managed services (such as managed security service providers); response services and education and training. Allan Carey, program manager for Information Security Services at IDC said security spending is still a priority for enterprises and security was one of the few IT markets where spending did not nosedive during 2001 and 2002. In the next few years, he predicts enterprises will need help from service providers in evaluating business risks and securing valuable assets. Networking experts blamed Microsoft's problems on a network domain which they said featured all four of its domain name server on the same network segment - creating a single point of failure. Following the debacle Microsoft has partially offloaded its DNS servers to Akamai Technologies - who tests suggest is running these servers on Linux. A number of Register readers have written to us pointing out that using nslookup, or other similar tools, its possible to see a number of servers in the akadns.com domain are listed as authoritative DNS servers for Microsoft's domains.
