Enhancing Remote Office Defense: The Layered Security Strategy

We all know that two-thirds of corporate hacks come from inside the firewall, making internal security as important as external. But what about your remote offices and SOHO workers? Are they as vulnerable to attacks as your corporate workers?. . .. We all know that two-thirds of corporate hacks come from inside the firewall, making internal security as important as external. But what about your remote offices and SOHO workers? Are they as vulnerable to attacks as your corporate workers? Why layered? Nearly two-thirds of all security breaches are caused by insiders accessing unauthorized information - something a corporate firewall can't stop. Most security experts believe layered security is the way to go, as it's only a matter of time before someone finds their way through any single layer. Furthermore, a good layered security system not only protects your key network access points, but also protects them against different avenues of attack, known as vectors, including insider attacks. The link for this article located at IDG is no longer available. . Layered security, or defense in depth, is vital for protecting remote offices from internal and external threats, especially with increased remote work demands.. Best Practices for Secure Remote Offices Using VPNs and Firewalls

This month I will look at what we might call "best practices" for internetworking remote offices. This month I will look at what we might call "best practices" for internetworking remote offices. It is arguably an old topic--we've been connecting remote offices over Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for a few years now. It is one of the main purposes for VPNs, second only to secure dial-in connections. And yet, I think most of us do it wrong. I want to suggest a way to do it better. (So maybe I'm addressing better practices.) I will do this by referring to how we did it wrong in my last job, and in retrospect, how we should have done it. We started, as most small organizations do, with remote offices connected to the Internet. This was back at the beginning of firewall use, but before people were even asking for VPNs. We had 4 offices, each connected behind a router with filtering rules--the common, if not best, practice. The Internet was our backbone, so to speak, and we allowed any kind of IP connectivity between the offices. The link for this article located at Avolio Consulting, Inc. is no longer available. . Ensure secure internetworking for remote offices through VPNs and firewalls by following best practices like strong protocols, MFA, and monitoring.
