As the Linux operating system makes ever-deeper inroads into government data centers, agencies need to feel comfortable that the open-source computing infrastructures they're rolling out are indeed secure. In general, firewalls protect enterprise networks from intruders. But enterprises also require other types of protection in case a hacker gets past the firewall. Traditional Unix vendors have always provided added security at the operating-system level, including so-called "trusted" versions designed to provide data centers and security operations with machine-level security. These trusted versions defend against unauthorized access to data and applications. . The link for this article located at Government Computer News is no longer available. . Start-up Guardian Digital has launched an effort to sell a version of Linux that's less vulnerable to attack, a niche the company hopes will gain it a foothold in the market for the Unix-like operating system. The Allendale, N.J.-based start-up released its EnGarde Secure Professional product Tuesday, a version of Linux that comes with management tools and server software designed to thwart attacks. The product costs $549, plus $219 per year for a mandatory software update service. Linux, like the Unix operating system on which it's based and other operating systems, has had its share of security problems, but often the problems come with higher-level software such as the SNMP service for letting administrators manage servers or the Apache program for sending Web pages to browsers. Guardian Digital aims to stomp out many of those problems by what software is used, testing it with the other software and in some cases writing new programs, said Chief Executive Dave Wreski. TechWeb summarizes the recent articles they have published on security Linux distributions including EnGarde, the Editor's Choice, HP Secure Linux and Immunix. " IT pros navigating a minefield of insecure software and systems are finding safe ground in Linux. That's because the open-source operating system--in part due to its very openness--has become a model of security. For one thing, Linux benefits from its similarities to Unix, long considered the most bulletproof operating system. Once hardened, Unix is nearly impenetrable--and much of this security translates nicely to Linux. For another, Linux has a global community of programmers continually evaluating the source code. That kind of scrutiny means flaws are typically discovered very quickly. And now, a new government initiative promises to make things even better. The Sardonix Audit Portal, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (the same organization that bankrolled the predecessor to the Internet), aims to be the one-stop site for organizing the efforts of critical Linux code reviewers everywhere. There's even good news on the product front: Network Computing recently reviewed a host of Linux security products, and found most of them to be just what the penguin ordered." Setting up a secure server isn't necessarily for the faint of heart. To make it easier for IT administrators, Guardian Digital Inc. has released EnGarde Secure Linux Version 1.2, offering a secure server operating system for mail, Web and other servers without the hassle of an intricate customization. The idea, said Dave Wreski, business director for the Upper Saddle River, N.J.-based security vendor, is that by building a secure Linux operating system from the ground up with the latest Linux kernel, Guardian can create a high-security system that doesn't need lots of user intervention. Instead of having system administrators go through the program and disable services, as occurs with many server operating systems, all services are turned off in the default installation. That gives companies quick control over their own network security, Wreski said. The link for this article located at ComputerWorld is no longer available. .
