The deeply embedded crypto algorithm lives on in 3DES, but that standard demands careful design and informed choices. You have only until Sept. 9 to object to the federal government's proposed decertification of the Data Encryption Standard. After reading the proposal, I'm tempted to complain that it would not leave DES sufficiently dead. Many would say that it's already been 15 years since the end of this algorithm's useful life, even though they'd likely agree with the laudatory eulogy by crypto guru Bruce Schneier. Knowledge of DES implementation issues will continue to be important, however, to those who want to build or buy secure systems. Military leaders agree that wireless communication is the wave of the future, but they also agree that it needs far greater security features to become deployable and reliable on the battlefield . Air Force Maj. Gen. John Bradley, deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command's joint task force for computer network operations, said the Defense Department not only needs more secure wireless tools, it also needs them to be smaller with solid encryption and authentication features. The joint task force, created about 18 months ago, is responsible for defending DOD networks from attack, according to Bradley, who was speaking during a Nov. 19 panel at the AFCEA International's TechNet Asia-Pacific International 2002 Conference and Exposition in Honolulu. Super-secure additions to the Linux operating system are inching closer to the mainstream. Developers have turned Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), a prototype created in part by the National Security Agency, into a module that operates almost seamlessly on the Linux operating system. "Even though SELinux wasn't intended as a complete secure system, we knew that as released it could make a substantial impact to the security of systems that incorporated it," says Grant Wagner, technical director for NSA's Secure Systems Research Office. An Australian company, that claims to have developed the ultimate security-proof system, will soon issue a multi-million dollar dare to the hacking underworld. With a 30-day deadline, the challenge to crack Secure Systems' Silicon Data Vault technology will be issued by 15 December. "We don't believe any hacker at all will get through the vault," Secure Systems chief executive, Mike Wynn, told ZDNet. A successful crack will see US$10,000 (£6,959) donated by Secure Systems to a charity of the hacker's choice, otherwise if the technology isn't penetrated, US$1m (£695,906) will be donated to the "Make a Wish Foundation" when Secure Systems strikes a commercialisation deal that takes the technology to market.
