Crystals could lead to super security chips that would make extraction of data more complex and so more difficult for attackers to decrypt. Researchers at Florida State University have discovered crystals that could lead to super security chips as well as contribute to the discovery of materials that expand the capacity of electronic storage devices by 1,000 to 1 million times.. The security chips could store encrypted data written two different ways -- electrically and magnetically -- making extraction of the data more complex and so more difficult for attackers to decrypt. If they have success developing a new storage medium, devices the size of a current 1GB storage components could hold an Exabyte -- a million million bytes -- of data. The researchers, headed up by professors Harry Kroto, a Nobel laureate, and Naresh Dalal, also say these crystals can be made using less toxic and more readily available materials than current chip materials that almost always include lead. The new materials would use manganese and iron instead, Dalal says. The main purpose of their research is to find materials whose crystalline structure can be used as the building blocks of digital circuits. Kroto calls this bottom-up design where the material itself provides the capacity to store data rather than top-down design in which structure needed to store data electronically are imposed on the surface of another medium. IBM plans to start shipping its PCs with a new chip designed to thwart hackers by safeguarding passwords and other sensitive identity information. Big Blue will be the first computer maker to use National Semiconductor's SafeKeeper Trusted I/O Device, which stores a computer's identity in silicon, making it harder for outsiders to access. It's adding the technology as part of an upgraded input-output chip, which is a secondary PC chip that shuttles data from various parts of a PC. "Security, encryption and password management are key components of IBM ThinkVantage Technologies, which simplify the PC user experience and reduce management costs for organizations of all sizes," Clain Anderson, program director in IBM's PC division, said in a statement. National Semi said that storing such information in hardware makes it inherently more secure than software-based approaches. The chip encrypts information using a code key only accessible to a specialized processor, protecting the information from outside hackers and user error and essentially locking it to the PC. As PC makers gear up to build desktops with hardware security, they face tough choices about how to implement a small but significant cryptography chip crucial to their architecture. That's because chipmakers are offering a bewildering array of options for so-called trusted platform modules, essentially low-cost silicon safes for a digital key. . . .. The chips typically cost less than $10 in volume and can encrypt and decrypt digital certificates and store them in on-board memory. The TPM chips are pivotal in a PC industry initiative to build hardware security into the desktop in tandem with the next major version of Windows dubbed Longhorn. Thus even though the chips are small they ultimately represent a new hundred million unit/year opportunity. Scrambling to get a foothold in that market, Broadcom Corp. announced Tuesday (Feb.17) it has licensed software from Infineon to enable it to build a TPM in its Gbit Ethernet media access controller. Infineon said it is seeking other deals to partner with companies wanting to integrate TPM capabilities into their chips. Meanwhile, National Semiconductor is planning to put a TPM in its Super I/O chips. And at least one vendor is said to be putting a TPM in its media processing silicon for consumer PCs.
