Pwn2Own 2023: Chrome Exploits and Use-After-Free Concerns

It's that time again folks, the hosting of the Pwn2Own hacking contest. This year has, for the first time, seen Google's Chrome browser fall almost immediately to two zero-day exploits, which had avoided discovery for the past three years. . The exploits make use of a use-after-free bug to bypass typical protection such as Data Execution Prevision (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), combined with a second exploit that allows execution of code, outside the safety of the Chrome sandbox. Though exact details of the hack were not revealed, it's strongly suspected to be via a bundled Adobe Flash plugin, surprise surprise, which to function correctly requires a less stringent sandbox to run in. Pwn2Own: iPhone, IE8, Safari, Firefox Compromised in Minutes

Hackers took down Apple 's iPhone and Safari browser, Microsoft 's Internet Explore 8 (IE8) and Mozilla's Firefox within minutes at today's Pwn2Own contest, as expected. The two-man team of Vincenzo Iozzo and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann exploited the iPhone in under five minutes, said a spokeswoman for 3Com TippingPoint, the security company that sponsored the contest. The pair also walked away with $15,000 in cash, a record prize for the challenge, which is in its fourth year. . Iozzo, an Italian college student, works for Zynamics GmbH, the company headed by noted researcher Thomas Dullien, better known as Halvar Flake, while Weinmann is a post-doctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Algorithms, Cryptology and Security at the University of Luxembourg. Weinmann is probably best known for being part of a three-man team that in 2007 demonstrated how to crack the Wi-Fi security protocol WEP much faster than previously thought possible. An ethical hacking contest at the annual DefCon conference in Las Vegas is aiming to promote better security practice. The Root Fu contest pits eight teams - including some experts from US federal agencies - against each other in a test of network defence and hacking skills. Each team has to defend their own server and applications while trying to break into the servers of the seven other teams. Crispin Cowan, chief scientist at Linux security seller Immunix and the leader of the Immunix team, said: "This sort of adversarial testing shows what is possible and not - with security. We value this competition, because we think it is a better evaluation of security than common criteria." Such comments conflict with tough talk from top-level US. officials who still look at hackers as a threat. Laws such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act have focused on punishing hackers. But knowledgeable security experts see practicing such skills with Root Fu-like challenges as a necessary way to improve security. OpenHack III, a computer-hacking contest sponsored by eWeek magazine, will feature some stiff competition when it opens Monday. In one corner is Savoy, Illinois-based Argus Systems Group, maker of a computer security product called PitBull that the company claims is virtually impenetrable. In the other is an army of hackers who will try to break into a PitBull-protected system and win a $50,000 prize, supplied by Argus. Hacking contests have been going on since the mid-1980s, but Argus has raised the stakes this time in an effort to validate a product it believes -- and many experts agree -- is the Fort Knox of computer security. Hackers generally try to access computer operating systems by exploiting holes in the applications the systems run, and most security products try to plug those holes. But PitBull protects the operating systems themselves, making it virtually impossible for a hacker to gain access. The link for this article located at CNN is no longer available. .
