The survey, conducted by Evans Data Corp., Santa Cruz, Calif., showed that developers view Linux as "the most innately secure operating system. In fact, the percentage of developers who said so increased to 23 percent, up from 19 percent six months ago. Meanwhile, according to the same survey, fewer developers said they believe Windows XP to be the most secure operating system. The number of developers who said they view Windows XP as most secure dropped from 14 per-cent six months ago to eight percent currently--a drop of more than 40 percent. According to Evans Data, which has been conducting its North American Development Surveys twice annually since 1998, developer confidence in Linux has increased by 90 percent since 1998. In a survey the company conducted in the fall of 1998, only 34 percent of developers polled said they thought Linux was an optimal system for enterprise applications, compared to 64 percent today. Developers Survey: Linux Security Perceived Better Than Windows

Is Linux built more securely than Windows? According to a new survey, Windows and Linux developers both say yes--and for the first time, ranked it ahead of Windows XP. The September 2003 study from market-research firm Evans Data Corp. surveyed more than 500 North American participants, including VARs, ISVs, OEMs and corporate developers, according to Esther Schindler, senior analyst with Santa Cruz, Calif.-based Evans. Linux scored high for innate security among respondents, more than two- thirds of whom "use or target Windows with their code." Indeed, only 23 percent of the developers were primarily Linux developers (an increase of 4 percent from a similar survey six months ago). "It's not all that surprising that Linux is viewed as more secure by software developers," Schindler said. "Windows has had nearly weekly critical security updates from Microsoft, and three of four developers target Windows. Development experience talks." Evans Data Corporation's Fall 2003 North American Development Survey has found that Linux has increased its lead in developers' minds as the "most innately secure operating system" from 19% six months ago to 23% today. At the same time, the percentage of developers who said that Windows XP is the most secure dropped by more than 40%, from 14% six months ago to 8% today. "It's not all that surprising that Linux is viewed as more secure by software developers. Windows has had nearly weekly critical security updates from Microsoft, and three of four developers target Windows," said Esther Schindler, Evans' senior analyst. "Development experience talks, a higher percentage of Windows developers said Linux is more 'innately secure' than did Linux developers." Other findings from the survey of more than 500 developers in North America include: Open source has become more socially acceptable over time. Back in Spring 2001, only 38% of developers used any open source software modules. Today, 62% of developers are incorporating open source code in their applications -- a growth rate of 63%. ( northamerican_xmp2.shtml) The three most expected features for Java development tools are Web services support, profilers and optimization tools, and J2EE frameworks. Confidence in Linux has risen by almost 90% since 1999. In Evans' Fall 1999 North American Development Survey, only 34% of developers felt the OS was ready for mission critical applications, compared to 64% expressing such confidence today. ( northamerican_xmp1.shtml) About Evans North American Development Survey The comprehensive report is more than 300 pages long and has been produced twice a year since 1998.
