In this article I have identified five influential security trends to watch in 2012. The results, identified by a team of highly experienced accredited security professionals and based upon extensive tests at client sites, suggest security threats are becoming more targeted and personal.. Hackers are sidestepping automated security technology and are using social engineering and data mining to orchestrate attacks against prominent individuals and their corporate networks. This trend has been brought about through advances in network protection and tighter regulation both of which have conspired to make it more difficult for hackers to compromise systems and create widespread disruption. The number of web-based threats soared by nearly two-thirds in April, according to new figures from managed security vendor Network Box. The firm said that the 63 per cent rise in internet threats was due in large part to phishing attacks, which represented one in four of the threats. . Simon Heron, internet security analyst at Network Box, warned that users should be on high alert. "The level of malware has leapt up this spring, and we expect to see a high level of attacks continue," he said. "A poor economy always leads to higher levels of malware aimed at scamming money from victims. Huge increases in social media use, with platforms that are not built primarily with security in mind, also open the door to hackers." Security issues involving Cisco kit highlighted in Michael Lynn’s presentation at Black Hat are characteristic of networking vendors in general. Cisco is just the most visible of these vendors to target as hackers raise their sights from attacking operating systems towards attacking network infrastructure and database systems, security researchers warn. . According to vulnerability management firm nCircle, virtually all the network vendors tend to run monolithic, closed OSs that are mission-critical for their customers and doesn't lend itself well to the simplistic desktop patching models currently in place. nCircle reckons as Microsoft's security gradually improves hackers will look to others mechanisms of attack - a trend that puts networking equipment in the firing line. Net users can expect a growth in attacks of Unix systems next year, not to mention more Blaster-style worms capable of infecting computers without using email. The growing trend of virus writers and spammers apparently working together (evidenced by worms like Sobig and Mimail) can also be expected to continue into 2004, according to security firm Sophos, which predict little let up in mass-mailing viruses next year. However, the UK-based anti-virus and anti-spam firm predicted that viruses infecting mobile devices will once again fail to pose much of a threat in 2004. . Individuals utilizing Unix systems should prepare for an uptick in cyber threats in the coming year, along with an increase in Blaster-like vulnerabilities.. More cyber attacks originate in the United States than in any other country, but the number of attacks that appear to come from Israel is nearly double that of any other nation, according to a study released Monday. High-tech, financial services, media/entertainment and power and energy companies showed the highest intensity of attacks per company, each averaging more than 700 attacks per company over the six-month period. On a percentage basis, most of the attacks were relatively benign in nature. But the number of severe attacks was still substantial, with critical and emergency-level events detected on 43% of the client networks, the study found.
