Openwall 3.0: Enhanced Security Features and 64-Bit Support

Marking nearly 10 years of Openwall GNU/*/Linux, the Openwall Project developers have released version 3.0 of Openwall. Openwall GNU/*/Linux, also known as Owl for short, is a small, security-enhanced distribution of Linux aimed at servers, appliances and virtual appliances.. In an email to The H, the developers said that version 3.0 of Openwall is "the first Linux distro to have no SUIDs (Set User IDs) in the default install", noting that, "Fedora are trying to do it too (haven't done it yet), but their approach is entirely different (they're mostly just 'sweeping SUIDs under the rug' by using fscaps instead, whereas we actually dealt with the underlying issues by reworking parts of the userland)". The latest version of Openwall adds support for 64-bit systems, as well as the Ext4 file system (the installer now uses Ext4 by default; however, Ext3 and Ext2 are still available as options) and sees the move to RHEL 5.5-like Linux 2.6 kernels with modifications. Other changes include xz compression support (LZMA, LZMA2), hardware compatibility improvements and a variety of packages updates, as well as several new packages. Sun Microsystems: Discontinuation of Cobalt Server Line and Support Info

Just three years after Sun Microsystems paid $2 billion in stock for server appliance maker Cobalt Networks, Sun has killed off the Cobalt product line. The move marks the end of the Cobalt brand of Linux servers at Sun, although Sun will continue to resell Linux operating systems from Red Hat and SuSE Linux on x86 servers. Sun also sells Linux for the desktop in the shape of the Sun Java Desktop, but its own server line now runs Solaris exclusively. . . .. A Sun representative said the company would maintain security patches and honor Cobalt warranties for the next three years. And Irish start-up Antefacto in 2002 picked up a part of the appliance server market by launching the S1000 high-availability appliance. On Sun's Web site, the latest Cobalt appliance server, the dual-processor Raq 550, has joined the Raq4R and other Cobalt devices in the end-of-life section. The actual date of termination for the Raq 550 is Feb. 19, 2004, according to the Sun representative. No new Cobalt devices are listed on the Web site, and Sun's entry-level server area is now populated exclusively with the Sun Fire range of servers. Sun's move marks the end of the line for one of the dot-com era's most innovative hardware manufacturers. As a start-up in the late '90s, Cobalt Networks popularized, if not created, the notion of the appliances--servers dedicated to a single task. Cobalt launched its first product, the Qube, in March 1998. This small, easy to use Web and e-mail server and gateway was designed for small businesses. Creating A Secure Server Appliance Using Trustix Secure Linux With Webmin

Although many Linux/UNIX diehards disagree, many, if not most system administrators nowadays are more comfortable working with a GUI, and therefore more favorably disposed towards an OS with one. But a problem with GUIs is that when they are running, but not actually being used, they take up disk space and system resources. So the ideal OS might be one that offers a GUI, but doesn't make its use mandatory for administration: one that only runs when needed. Such an OS doesn't appear to exist, but I found a way to satisfy these requirements by combining a couple of existing software packages. The tendency with most NOSes is to activate all services by default. This makes it easier for the inexperienced admin to set up a server, but results in one that is wide open to attack. Since we're looking for a security improvement, I wanted an NOS which when installed activates a minimum of services automatically. Specifically, I was looking for a Linux distribution that was designed somewhat along the lines of OpenBSD, i.e., "secure by default." Also, it should also give me flexibility as to partitioning and what software is installed. The link for this article located at Linux.com is no longer available. . WireX Immunix Workgroup Server: Secure Protection Against Hacker Attacks

WireX server appliance software, which makes systems less vulnerable to corruption and hacker attacks, debuts at Linuxworld Conference & Expo PORTLAND, OR - August 9, 2000- WireX, a developer of software for 'purpose-specific' servers, commonly known as server appliances, today announced . . . . WireX server appliance software, which makes systems less vulnerable to corruption and hacker attacks, debuts at Linuxworld Conference & Expo PORTLAND, OR - August 9, 2000- WireX, a developer of software for 'purpose-specific' servers, commonly known as server appliances, today announced the availability of its latest configuration: Immunix Workgroup Server Appliance. This easy-to-administer, inexpensive, "all-in-one" workgroup server appliance integrates web, email, file and print server functionality, as well its ability to protect servers from future and unknown hacker attacks. The Immunix Workgroup Server is the ideal solution for small to medium sized businesses that want to reduce total cost of ownership. Traditional general-purpose servers are complex, require highly skilled IT administration and are expensive to maintain. The Immunix Workgroup Server Appliance includes web-based remote network administration, which increases productivity by providing an intuitive, menu-driven interface that scales to technical and non-technical server administrators. "Small business owners have begun to rely more heavily on their networks to support the mission-critical functions of their business. They are looking for server products that provide increased levels of reliability and security at an affordable price. And, server appliances are attracting a new group of customers who have limited IT knowledge", said Joonees K. Chay, CEO. The Immunix Workgroup Server Appliance features: Operating System Independent: Remote network user interface Easy to Use: OS platform expertise is not required Scalable User Interface: From basic to advanced network users Built-in Localization Engine: Ready for text translation in anylanguage More Secure and Reliable: When compared to conventional Linux servers Runs on most off-the-shelf PC hardware Significantly less expensive to own and operate The Immunix Workgroup Server Appliance is based on Immunix OS, a value-added standard Linux distribution, which includes "immunized" integrated server components developed by WireX. There are several types of host-survivability technologies that are included in every WireX server appliance that makes the system less vulnerable to corruption and hacker attacks: SubDomain acts like a bank's vault alarm system that locks down upon intrusion. Acting like a virtual firewall inside the server, SubDomain-confined programs are effectively quarantined to protect the rest of the system from damage. StackGuard protects vulnerable programs against the most common form of hacker attacks, "stack smashing" buffer overflow attacks. CryptoMark prevents the installation of improper or malicious programs that hackers use to gain access. Combined, these technologies produce a highly secure server that does not need constant patching and is completely compatible with other servers and clients. The end result is a system that is easier to administer, less expensive to operate, and is host-survivable without performance penalty. "Immunix provides one of the most secure server platform solutions today without compromising functional features required to operate a network administration," says Dr. Crispin Cowan, Chief Scientist at WireX. "Combine that with the ease of use of our RNAEngine administration tools and low cost of ownership, and you have a dedicated workgroup server perfect for the IT needs of a small business or a Fortune 500 corporate department." WireX will be demonstrating the Immunix Workgroup Server Appliance at Linuxworld Conference and Expo in San Jose, California, August 15th -17th at Booth #3044. A Press Conference is scheduled for August 17th at 11:00 AM in Room K at the San Jose Convention Center. Price and Availability The ImmunixWorkgroup Server software is now available to WireX's OEM partners and Solution Providers through WireX's website and is priced at less than $200.00 per unit. Strategic cooperative marketing partnership programs are also available. WireX partners with hardware manufacturers and solution providers to offer an integrated hardware and software server solution.
