Understanding the Risks of Amateur Encryption in Smart Grid Protocols

Anyone can design a cipher that he himself cannot break. This is why you should uniformly distrust amateur cryptography, and why you should only use published algorithms that have withstood broad cryptanalysis. All cryptographers know this, but non-cryptographers do not. And this is why we repeatedly see bad amateur cryptography in fielded systems. . The latest is the cryptography in the Open Smart Grid Protocol, which is so bad as to be laughable. From the paper: The link for this article located at Schneier on Security is no longer available. . Amateur cryptography often poses security risks due to self-made ciphers lacking rigorous scrutiny, leading to vulnerabilities exploitable by skilled attackers. Assessing Weak Crypto Threats in Open Smart Grid Protocol

In the three years since its inception, the Open Smart Grid Protocol has found its way into more than four million smart meters and similar devices worldwide.. And like its SCADA, industrial control system, and embedded system brethren, it The link for this article located at ThreatPost is no longer available. . The reliance on smart devices in the Open Smart Grid Protocol creates vulnerabilities from weak cryptographic measures, risking user privacy and energy reliability. Emerging Challenges in Cloud Security Due to Sophisticated Threats

A second area of focus must be in the way we understand and address threats. The threat landscape has evolved dramatically in the past three years: Starting in 2008 with the growing ability of viruses and malware to evade anti-virus signature technologies; to the pandemic scale of attacks launched by criminals in 2009 for profit; to more sophisticated attacks organised by nation states in 2010.. In 2011 we must also defend against the potentially catastrophic danger of Advanced Persistent Threats perpetrated by non-state actors and terrorists. By manipulating control systems in critical infrastructure facilities, Stuxnet was the first Trojan to cross the chasm from the digital realm into the physical world. Stuxnet foreshadows what the future of cyber warfare or terrorism might hold and is the reason that next generation infrastructure initiatives like smart grid must have security embedded. According to researchers from IEEE SmartGrid Comm2010, the smart grid will offer up to 440 million potential points to be hacked. Stuxnet is a wake-up call to a very real and present danger and a stark reminder of the need for collaboration not only among businesses but between nations in an increasingly interdependent world.. Guarding against sophisticated ongoing threats is essential for the protection of cloud infrastructure today.. Cloud Security, Advanced Threats, Cybersecurity Risks, Infrastructure Protection. . Comprehensive NIST Smart Grid Cybersecurity Guide for Risk Management

The US has released a 537-page guide on how to protect the country's electrical power grid from cyber attack. The guidelines on security requirements and a risk assessment framework were published by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).. The guidelines also include an evaluation of privacy concerns, guides to mitigating vulnerabilities, and a summary of research needs. In 2007, Congress tasked NIST with developing a framework for secure, interoperable smart grid technology. The urgency of the project was highlighted in July by appearance of the first publicly-known malware to target software that manages critical infrastructure, according to US reports. The Stuxnet Trojan, which targeted supervisory control and data acquisition (Scada) software by Siemens, is believed to have infected at least a dozen systems worldwide. . The guidelines also include an evaluation of privacy concerns, guides to mitigating vulnerabilities,. released, 537-page, guide, protect, country's, electrical, power. . Alex
