PyTorch Nightly Builds Compromised: Urgent Action Required

Users who deployed the nightly builds of PyTorch between Christmas and New Year's Eve likely received a rogue package as part of the installation that siphoned off sensitive data from their systems. The incident was the result of an attack called dependency confusion that continues to impact package managers and development environments if hardening steps are not taken. . "If you installed PyTorch nightly on Linux via pip between December 25, 2022, and December 30, 2022, please uninstall it and torchtriton immediately, and use the latest nightly binaries (newer than December 30, 2022)," the PyTorch maintainers said in a security advisory . PyTorch is a framework for developing machine learning applications in the fields of computer vision and natural language processing that is a continuation of the older and no longer maintained Torch library. PyTorch was originally developed by Meta AI, the artificial intelligence laboratory of Meta, Inc., but is now an open-source project maintained by the PyTorch Foundation under the Linux Foundation's umbrella. . Individuals using PyTorch's nightly builds from late December 2022 could have inadvertently downloaded a malicious module that jeopardized private information.. Exploring Open Source Adoption Hurdles in Enterprise IT with Mozilla

Mozilla, maker of the open source Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client, says a reliance on proprietary technologies is still an obstacle for IT directors looking to deploy open source in the enterprise. Mozilla Corporation CEO Mitchell Baker readily admitted to silicon.com that the enterprise is "not our sweet spot" but said the organisation offers an enterprise customisation kit created by an IBM developer and said it's interested in working with partners to address the needs of corporate IT. . Baker said: "The gold is the company that steps up and says 'I'm willing to do something'." Currently Mozilla believes more users fire up Firefox at home than at work, as usage numbers jump at the weekend. While many IT directors do allow the open source browser to be used on company time, those that don't are often held back by the proprietary technologies employed on their intranets. Exploring Global Government Adoption Of Open Source Software

The number of open source deployments by governments across the world has accelerated over the last few years. To date at least 160 international local and national governments have deployed open source software and over $2bn has been spent on the Linux open source operating system, according to figures from Linux vendor Red Hat. . The use of open source software varies widely between different countries, for example, while the UK government continues to strikes long-term multi-million pound deals with proprietary giant Microsoft, the French are enthusiastically adopting open source software in both national and local government agencies. Outside the Western world, where cost becomes more of an issue, it might be expected that open source software would be more popular. While this is the case to some extent – it's not that clear cut. The Brazilian federal government is issuing policies strongly in favour of open source, but other countries have signed sweeping deals with Microsoft, such as the Eastern European state of Macedonia. Deciding what lies at the heart of some countries almost zealous uptake of open source is not a simple as looking at the cold hard costs – politics, national security, anti-Americanism and innovation all have a part to play.
