To become a Linux developer, you used to need C as your passport. Now Rust can let you be an OS programmer as well. . The joke goes: "C combines the power and performance of assembly language with the flexibility and ease-of-use of assembly language." Having programmed in both C and IBM 360 Assembler – it was a long time ago, OK – there's something to that. Because of its power, performance, and portability, C became the operating system language of choice, including, of course, Linux. There's only one little problem with C. It's really easy to make blunders. Big, ugly ones. That's where Rust comes in. . Rust is gaining ground as a robust alternative to C in Linux development, focusing on safety and concurrency in high-performance environments without a garbage collector. The ability to enhance security in information systems and networks is limited by the operating systems that underpin them. Recognizing this, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has begun work on a standard to formulate consistent baseline security requirements for general-purpose (GP), commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) operating systems. The standard, IEEE P2200(TM), "Base Operating System Security (BOSS(TM))," will address external threats and intrinsic flaws arising from software design and engineering practices. Anyone with expertise in software engineering, metrics for software, cyber security, operating system development and related areas is invited to participate. Plans call for the standard to be completed on an accelerated schedule by the end of 2004. IEEE P2200 will build on guidance issued by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) couched in terms of protection profiles within the International Organization for Standards (ISO) Common Criteria (CC) framework. It will address essential functions for cross-platform security, including identification and authentification, access control and key cryptographic concepts. Over year ago, with couple of friends, we started writing a project, called 'Samhain' (days ago, on packetstorm, I noticed cute program with same name - in fact it's not the same app, just a coincidence ;). We wanted to see if it's difficult to write deadly harmful Internet worm, probably much more dangerous than Morris's worm. The link for this article located at LinuxNews.pl is no longer available. . Crafting 'Samhain' ignited in cyberspace, driven by ambition and desire for power, as hackers aimed to redefine the digital battlefield without detection.
