Uncover Exciting Developments in Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur

Ubuntu has been depending on baby steps to keep it moving forward. And although Mantic Minitaur might look as if it follows that pattern, there's more to it than meets the eye. . I've been a fan of Ubuntu for a very long time. And although straight-up Ubuntu isn't my desktop of choice (that honor belongs to Ubuntu Budgie), I've always found Canonical's distribution to be one I highly respected and wouldn't hesitate to suggest for users of all skill levels. Over the years, I've grown accustomed to the small steps taken by Canonical with Ubuntu. Its releases aren't exactly splashy but they certainly are reliable. So, when I downloaded the daily build of Ubuntu 23.10, I expected the usual "boring" upgrade. I was both validated and surprised. On the surface, Ubuntu 23.10 seems more of the same. Ubuntu looks and feels like the Ubuntu I've been experiencing for the past few years. However, when you start digging in, you realize there's more than meets the eye. . Delve into the surprising richness of the updates in Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaurs, which ensure it maintains its significance in today's landscape.. Fedora 10: Major Release With Security Issues and Community Growth

Any release of a GNU/Linux distribution marks a milestone in a continuous cycle of software development. However, Fedora 10 promises to be a larger milestone than most, both for its development community and users, according to Paul W. Frields, the Fedora leader and chair. . On the one hand, its release on November 25 is being accomplished despite a major security problem and the need to deal with a rapidly growing community – and reputation – in the free and open source software (FOSS) ecosystem. On the other hand, in many ways the release could be seen as an infrastructure release, with many of the changes being either improvements of existing features, or the first stage in the ongoing development of new features. The release has been delayed three to four weeks thanks to a major security breach in the Fedora and Red Hat repositories that was discovered in mid-August and not fixed until September 10th. Google Chrome 12 Security Features: Safeguarding Against Harmful Downloads

Google is updating its Chrome web browser, Chrome 12, with new performance and security features. Chrome 12 is now available in Google's dev-channel, providing users with a sneak peak of what Google has in store . Chrome 12 includes a new version of the V8 JavaScript engine as well as an overall code cleanup.. On the security side, Chrome 12 is introducing new protection for users to help mitigate the risk of malicious downloads. The new feature will alert users when they are downloading a file, if the file has malicious content in it. The new safe downloading feature is still in the development phase though it is on by default for Chrome 12 and does require users to activate with a startup flag. The safe downloading capability is different than the safe browsing feature that Google Chrome has had since its debut. Safe browsing alerts users when they are about to visit a page that potentially includes malicious content. The link for this article located at eSecurity Planet is no longer available. . Firefox 1.5 Beta Security Updates and User Experience Review

First came all the praise about Firefox 1.0 being more secure than Internet Explorer (IE). Then came headlines about mega-downloads chipping away at Microsoft's market share. Then came months of uncovered flaws and security updates that now has Firefox up to version 1.0.7. . Now comes Firefox 1.5 in beta, an upgrade Mozilla Engineering Director Mike Schroepfer said will be more secure than ever, with an automatic update service that downloads patches as needed. Indeed, blogs and Web sites are buzzing about the beta release, including MozillaZine, WebmasterWorld.com and PC World's blog. But will Firefox 1.5 live up to the hype? SearchSecurity.com asked those who have tried it to weigh in. Based on the responses, the new version appears to be faster and more user-friendly but not necessarily more secure. If you've already switched from IE to Firefox, you're bound to like 1.5. If you've played around with Firefox but haven't embraced it as more secure, this update may not be the one that converts you. Here are two IT professionals who have dabbled with the beta copy. One uses Firefox regularly. The other uses IE and remains unconvinced that switching to Mozilla's browser will make his enterprise more secure. The link for this article located at SearchSecurity is no longer available. . A buffer overflow is a memory error in software that allows an attacker to run a malicious program. "I could say that I am killing buffer overflows, but I am in the security community, so I have to put it in quotes," he told attendees at the CanSecWest security show on Thursday.
