KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America: Insights on Open Source Security

Vulnerabilities in the life cycle of open-source software development can start from tiny crumbs but grow into substantial issues. This week’s KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America in-person and virtual conference put security for open-source development back in the spotlight while also talking up cloud native’s rapid rise. Here are the highlights you should know about. . Pryanka Sharma, general manager of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), the event host; Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation; and Bryan Behlendorf, general manager of the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), spoke to analysts and press about the trajectory and scale of cloud native adoption. They also presented ways their teams aim to improve the security dilemmas tied to open-source development in this space. . Understanding Open Source Software Security Risks and Issues

Security flaws in open source software have increased and can take a long time to be added to the National Vulnerability Database, says RiskSense. . Open source software offers certain benefits over commercial products. As the source code is publicly available, developers can modify and tweak OSS applications to enhance their capabilities. Plus, the huge number of people who use these programs serve as a crowdsourced way to test their reliability and security. However, that doesn't mean OSS applications are immune from flaws and vulnerabilities. . The advantages of open source applications are notable, yet they cannot eclipse the dangers arising from increasing vulnerabilities. Acknowledge the threats.. NSA: Communication Failures In Surveillance Technology Programs

Two technology programs at the heart of the National Security Agency's drive to combat 21st-century threats are stumbling badly, hampering the agency's ability to fight terrorism and other emerging threats, current and former government officials say. One is Cryptologic Mission Management, a computer software program with an estimated cost of $300 million that was designed to help the NSA track the implementation of new projects but is so flawed that the agency is trying to pull the plug. The other, code-named Groundbreaker, is a multibillion-dollar computer systems upgrade that frequently gets its wires crossed. . The downfall of the Cryptologic Mission Management program has not previously been disclosed. While Congress raised concerns about the agency's management of Groundbreaker in a 2003 report, the extent and impact of its inadequacies have not been discussed publicly. Intelligence experts told The Sun that as a result of these failures, agency computers have trouble talking to each other and frequently crash, key bits of data are sometimes lost, and vital intelligence can be overlooked - all as the agency aggressively argues for broader surveillance power under the president's warrantless wiretapping program. The link for this article located at Baltimore Sun is no longer available. . The deficiencies in Intelligence Coordination greatly restrict the CIA's ability to counteract threats, resulting in operational inefficiencies..
