P-Cube Engage v2.1 Security Update: Spam Defense and DDoS Protection

Company, soon to be owned by Cisco, enhances the security features of its Engage v2.1 service application to detect and defend against spam zombies.P-Cube has announced a new weapon in service providers' ongoing war against hackers . . .. P-Cube has announced a new weapon in service providers' ongoing war against hackers and spammers. The Sunnyvale, CA-based IP service control solutions vendor, soon to be owned by Cisco, has enhanced the security features of its Engage v2.1 service application to detect and defend against spam zombies. These attacks are a growing menace for service providers and their subscribers. Hackers and spammers use the attacks to infect host systems with Trojan horses, programs that can distribute more spam or be used in distributed denial of service attacks. Up to 80 per cent of all spam originates from spam zombies, making them a significant cause of storage, bandwidth and productivity loss says P-Cube CEO and president Yuval Shahar. "Augmenting our industry-leading P2P solution, Engage adds security capabilities to our existing service control technology with DDoS and spam protection," Shahar said in a statement. "Our service control technology gives service providers, for the first time, the ability to eliminate the threat posed by legions of spam zombies without disrupting network performance, allowing providers to manage their networks for advanced services delivery." The two predominant themes in the responses I received on my Blended Threat column two weeks back were rage and resolve. Many of you were tired of dealing with spam, viruses, malware, and even legitimate but persistent and annoying advertisements. You thought you should be better protected at work by your systems folks. That seemed reasonable to me. A few of you also noted that these problems were largely confined to Microsoft Windows-based systems and suggested switching to the Apple OS or Linux. Effective Strategies For Email Client Security Against Spam And Viruses

Today we'll look at how to secure your users' email clients. The reason for employing layers of security at both the server and client level is simple, Grasshopper; do not depend solely on border defenses or the succulent soft underbelly of your network will remain at risk. I'm sure you've heard it a million times -- "Don't use Outlook or Outlook Express." It's darn good advice. Outlook is useful on an intranet, when you need the full scheduling, contacts, document sharing, and other groupware features. For Internet mail -- well, its record speaks for itself. For those who really must use it, see Resources for tips on making Outlook not quite so insecure. If all you need is a POP or IMAP mail client for Windows, Eudora, Pegasus, and Mozilla Mail are excellent choices. They are far less open to exploits, and they use generic mailbox formats instead of the "seekrit" proprietary formats of Outlook/Outlook Express. This makes disaster recovery and importing/exporting a lot easier, because the files can be read as plain text. The link for this article located at CrossNodes is no longer available. . New Tools For Corporate Email Security Against Rising Spam Threats

As spam continues to roll over corporate networks in ever-larger quantities, the cavalry of vendors offering defenses continues to grow as well. No fewer than five vendors are shipping or are about to release new products designed to keep spam from polluting corporate e-mail systems. This week, MailFrontier plans to release a gateway product and upgrades to its client software at the Demo 2003 conference, which is being held in Scottsdale, Ariz., and run by IDG Executive Forums, a division of Network World. Also this week, Sunbelt Software will unveil the server Latest News about Servers edition of its IHateSpam filtering software. Singlefin last week introduced its Local Messaging Switch, a corporate gateway spam filter. Stealth start-up Q-Spam will announce its new name and product in March, and TumbleWeed in April is expected to release a new spam module for its SecureMail product. The spate of products not only highlights the options that companies have for building perimeter defenses against spam, but also reinforces the commonly held notion that spammers remain a step ahead. Spam blocker Postini reports that it filtered more than 600 million spam messages in the last 30 days, more than a 50% jump from just five months ago. .
