Spamhaus Introduces New Antimalware Data Feeds to Block Malware Sites

The Spamhaus Project will soon publish two new data feeds intended to prevent people from being lured to malware-infected websites and domains.. The organization, which has long been in the forefront of efforts to stop junk mail, said the two data sets are part of its Domain Block List (DBL), a database updated constantly with spammy domains appearing in emails. The DBL data feed can be incorporated into mail server software that scans messages for the presence of those blacklisted domains. Spamhaus Introduces New Whitelist Service Excluding Marketing Emails

The Spamhaus Project has debuted a new whitelisting service that is designed to be the inverse of the way that most approved-sender lists work. The Spamhaus Whitelist will exclude by default any IP address or domain that sends marketing or soliciting mail at all and will require domain owners to have an inviation in order to join the whitelist.. The new whitelist service comprises two separate parts: an IP address whitelist and a domain whitelist. The services operate on the principle that mail senders must know the users to whom they are sending email. "Unlike traditional whitelists, the Spamhaus Whitelist is not a service to help bulk mail senders improve delivery rates. You can not whitelist an IP address or domain that is used for sending marketing or soliciting bulk email, or used for sending any email on behalf of third parties. This rule therefore automatically excludes (makes not eligible for whitelisting) Email Service Providers, ISP customer mail relays and mail servers used by third-parties, and all bulk mailing list servers and services," the company said in its explanation of the service. Comprehensive Guide to Setting Up Postfix for Optimal Spam Control

The last few weeks have seen a dramatic increase in spam (once again). Estimates say that spam makes now up for 80 - 90% of all emails, and many mail servers have difficulties in managing the additional load caused by the latest spam, and spam filters such as SpamAssassin do not recognize large parts of that spam as they did before. Fortunately, we can block a big amount of that spam at the MTA level, for example by using blacklists, running tests on the sender and recipient domains, etc.. An additional benefit of doing this is that it lowers the load on the mail servers because the (resource-hungry) spamfilters have to look at less emails. This is just a quick guide showing you how you can configure Postfix (2.x and 1.x) to block spam before entering the server. It's more or less self-explanatory. However, after applying this to your own mail server, you should check the mail log to make sure that no legitmate mails are blocked. You should also take a look at this guide: https://www.howtoforge.com/virtual_postfix_antispam The link for this article located at howtoforge.com is no longer available. . Enhance your email processing and mitigate spam at the MTA level by implementing greylisting, SPF records, DKIM signing, and more effective techniques. 90% of Global Email Traffic Now Composed Of Spam Messages

Criminal gangs using hijacked computers are behind a surge in unwanted e-mails peddling sex, drugs and stock tips. The number of "spam" messages has tripled since June and now accounts for as many as nine out of 10 e-mails sent worldwide, according to U.S. email security company Postini. As Christmas approaches, the daily trawl through in-boxes clogged with offers of fake Viagra, loans and sex aids is tipped to take even longer. "E-mail systems are overloaded or melting down trying to keep up with all the spam," said Dan Druker, a vice president at Postini. . His company has detected 7 billion spam e-mails worldwide in November compared to 2.5 billion in June. Spam in Britain has risen by 50 percent in the last two months alone, according to Internet security company SurfControl. The United States, China and Poland are the top sources of spam, data from security firm Marshal suggests. The link for this article located at CNN is no longer available. . Hong Kong Drafts First Anti-Spam Law With Serious Penalties

Hong Kong is readying its first anti-spam laws, promising fines and long prison terms for serious offenders. The Chinese territory currently has no laws specifically outlawing junk email, and recent surveys looking at the sources of spam have included Hong Kong and China among the worst in the world. . The proposed new law appears to threaten companies which knowingly use spammers to market their products if they are based in, or do business in, Hong Kong. It may also allow action against individuals who authorise spam campaigns if they are in Hong Kong at the time the spam is sent. Effective Email Filtering with SpamBayes for Better Management

Spam email is the plague of the 21st century; SpamBayes is its cure. This client-side application analyzes all incoming email messages and automatically sorts out those that are unwanted. SpamBayes digests the contents of email messages and counts how often certain words -- e.g. Viagra -- occur in spam (bad) or ham (good) messages. Based on these word patterns, it calculates an overall score that rates a message as spam, ham, or unknown. You can manually classify unknown mail as spam or ham and SpamBayes will learn accordingly. . The SpamBayes classification sorts out virtually all spam messages and almost never produces a false positive -- that is, a good message wrongly identified as spam. Only once have I had to fetch an email from the junk mail folder. This happened when a Spanish friend wrote me, presumably because Spanish messages are rare in my inbox. I corrected the wrong classification, and all her subsequent messages were recognized as good. The program improves precision with each manual correction. SpamBayes can be run as an Outlook plugin under Windows or as a POP3 or IMAP proxy under Windows, Linux/Unix, and Mac OS. The link for this article located at Newsforge is no longer available. . FTC Study On Email Filtering Techniques And Address Masking

Trickery and technology both play key roles in managing spam, according to a study released yesterday by the Federal Trade Commission. The agency looked at three aspects of spamming and efforts to control it: the automated harvesting of E-mail addresses on public areas of the Internet; using E-mail address masking to reduce address harvesting; and the effectiveness of spam filtering by Internet Service Providers. . To conduct its five-week study, the FTC established 50 test E-mail accounts at each of three separate ISPs; two used spam filters and one didn't. It also posted 50 E-mail addresses on various Web sites, chat rooms, message boards, USENET groups, and blogs. The link for this article located at SecurityPipeline is no longer available. . Exploring Messaging Security Innovations and Effective Spam Prevention

After years of narrow focus on fighting spam, messaging security vendors are branching out in new directions as corporate customers demand more from them than filtering unwanted e-mail. At the same time, this crowded industry is overripe for consolidation, and experts believe only those companies with the technology and deep pockets to satisfy growing customer demands will be left standing. . Messaging security vendors face a dilemma; they must stay focused on blocking spam, viruses and other nasty code flooding corporate e-mail streams. But as spam and virus blocking become check-list items instead of purchase drivers, vendors looking to stand out are adding new features ranging from encryption and policy enforcement for outbound messages to new product lines that protect communications other than e-mail, such as instant messaging or Web interactions.
