Managing Network Security takes a management view of protection and seeks to reconcile the need for security with the limitations of technology. In the last few months, California has started to suffer under the artificial power crunch and highly inflated prices that arise when the Republicans dominate the presidency and both houses of Congress. With the movement of one senator to party independence this has changed and prices are starting to ease while power availability is on the increase. The law suits will follow. Of course none of this has anything to do with the power crunch I am talking about in my article this month, but then what do you expect when I write these things on a Sunday morning... The crunch I am referring to is the very real crunch associated with the effects of power - electrical power that is - on our buying decisions with regard to computers. But I am rushing ahead without beginning at the beginning... The link for this article located at Fred Cohen is no longer available. . Managing Network Security takes a management view of protection and seeks to reconcile the need for security with the limitations of technology. It seems that eliminating IP address forgery is now all the rage because it is now affecting enough people who are important enough to get the whole Internet to take action. And it is indeed gratifying to see this - despite the frustration I suffer over the lack of citation to my original paper on the subject and my firewalls course that has covered this subject in detail for the last five years. Effective Management Strategies for Network Security Against Threats

Managing Network Security takes a management view of protection and seeks to reconcile the need for security with the limitations of technology. In today's article, I will be testing the notion that you can effectively test your defenses by trying to break into them. I am in a more formal mood than usual, owing at least in part to the fact that I have been working for the last 48 hours or so (over a weekend of course) reconfiguring a network to get some of the defenses really right - and testing these configurations...
