Identifying Hidden Risks in FOSS and Enhancing Security Awareness

A preliminary study released February 18, which we directed alongside the Linux Foundation, numerous troubling trends in open source security underscore the importance of understanding where open source is most used and could be vulnerable to attack. . Commonly used free and open source software (FOSS) is one of the most significant technological trends of the decade. After all, 80-90 percent of a typical application contains FOSS components (pdf) . And that trend is only increasing with its use in smart phones, cars, the Internet of Things, and numerous pieces of critical infrastructure. But without appropriate investment and maintenance, that widespread adoption has the potential to become a liability. Affordable Fax Solutions for Seamless Document Transfers in Enterprises

Want an affordable technology that gets documents and images from Point A to Point B more reliably than a private courier? Then get the facts straight: Facsimile, or fax, technology is not dead. Enterprises still use faxes to extend offers, advertise and promote products, and seal deals. . . .. Want an affordable technology that gets documents and images from Point A to Point B more reliably than a private courier? Then get the facts straight: Facsimile, or fax, technology is not dead. Enterprises still use faxes to extend offers, advertise and promote products, and seal deals. In addition, many courts accept faxes to file motions, and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) considers point-to-point fax secure enough to exempt it from privacy and security controls. Fax usage continues to grow at incremental rates, even in lean times. Shipments of hard-copy output devices, such as fax machines, printers, copiers and multifunction printers, increased 3.5 percent in 2003 while overall end-user spending decreased by 11.5 percent, according to Gartner. Why? Fax technology is an affordable, mature solution that gets the job done. However, if you want multiple people in your enterprise to send and receive faxes at the click of a mouse, you need more than a fax machine. You need a fax server. Fax servers have three basic parts: a PC running an operating system, fax server application software and an intelligent fax board, such as Brooktrout's TR1034 or TR114 or Intel's Dialogic/GammaFax. Wireless security is one of the hottest topics in our business. In the article you are just reading, I've tried to cover some of the most interesting wireless security topics and events in 2003. The article is divided into several thematical sections: general overview of the wireless security happenings, look back on some software tools, spotlight of two interesting books, a brief positive rant on corporate security world and a Q&A with three wireless security experts working at Funk Software, AirScanner Corporation and IBM. The first news item added to Help Net Security in this year was "Wi-Fi: The National Security Threat". The topic of this news item, was literally copied all over and over throughout the year, so the majority of news stories dissed wireless security. This media "attack" on wire-free network security, eventually lead to a raise in wireless security awareness and better state of security in general.
