Effective Password Strategies For Improved Security And Usability

Security companies and IT people constantly tells us that we should use complex and difficult passwords. This is bad advice, because you can actually make usable, easy to remember and highly secure passwords. In fact, usable passwords are often far better than complex ones.. So let's dive into the world of passwords, and look at what makes a password secure in practical terms. When is a password secure? You cannot protect against "asking" and "guessing", but you can protect yourself from the other forms of attacks. A hacker will usually create an automated script or a program that does the work for him. He isn't going to sit around manually trying 500,000 different words to see if one of them is your password. Expert Panel Discusses Usability Barriers in Cryptography Adoption

US government controls held back cryptography in the past, but today, it's usability that blocks adoption, a panel of experts said on Thursday. At an event in Mountain View, California, celebrating 30 years of public key cryptography, several top minds in the field gathered for a trip down memory lane. Over the years, public key cryptography has grown from an idea in a paper published by Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman, both present at the event, to technology used in everyday transactions on the web. . Achieving Harmony in Security and Usability During Software Development

sability of security software is partly to blame for low protection levels in many computers, according to international security experts. In a panel session at this year's Australian Unix Users Group (AUUG) conference in Melbourne yesterday, software security developers gave reasons why the IT industry is still at the mercy of so many problems. University of Auckland computer scientist Peter Gutmann said many security standards were written 10 years ago and have mostly just been tweaked since then. "A lot of the security stuff is designed by crypto geeks [and] because of a lack of usability, people can't apply them correctly," Gutmann said, adding usability is just as important as "having a bunch of crypto and let people figure it out from there". . Comodo's Zero Touch Linux Initiative: Enhancing Usability for Businesses

Comodo, a leading provider of critical infrastructure solutions, has identified lack of usability as the critical hurdle standing between Linux and total back office server domination. . New Jersey. 15th March 2005. Comodo, a leading provider of critical infrastructure solutions, has identified lack of usability as the critical hurdle standing between Linux and total back office server domination. Their response, the Zero Touch Linuxä project is a strategy designed to encourage open source adoption amongst businesses by removing the complexity usually associated with Linux server management and configuration. Comodo leverage a suite of highly intuitive user interfaces across a range of server applications on top of their secure Linux operating system, Trustixä OS. “We need to live in a Zero Touch world if Linux and the open source model is to displace proprietary software in corporate back office infrastructures,. Uncover the ways in which Comodo's Zero Touch Linux initiative seeks to improve user experience and foster Linux integration in corporate environments.. An upgraded GNOME desktop environment for Linux and Unix is due for release this Wednesday, with its authors pitching enhanced features for end-users and a commitment to make hardware "just work". Popular Linux and Unix desktop environments such as GNOME and KDE have traditionally appealed to technical people with time to spend on tweaking new hardware configurations and knowledge of Unix commands. However, with the upcoming release of GNOME version 2.8, the project is expected to increase its usability for mere mortals in the computing industry. National Security Site Design Flaws and Usability Issues Revealed

The designers of the Federal Government's National Security Web site, which was set up to educate people about the dangers which the Government claims the country faces, apparently do read what's been written about their site . Some modifications have been made to the site on January 2 but the text index still displays in an extremely funny way - the left-hand side bar appears at the top of the page and the text which is meant to sit in the centre appears at the bottom! One can't help wondering why a Government which can find several million dollars to run advertisements - which add nothing to the average Aussie's comprehension of the terror threat - cannot pay a decent Web designer a couple of thousand and get a decent page designed. . The Federal Government's National Security website is essential for public access but has design flaws that hinder user experience and accessibility. A vast number of programs can be loosely described as network management tools. This reflects both users' desperate need for help and the broad range of problems you can encounter on a network. Among the long list of concerns, network security has recently come to the forefront. Besides the threat of break-in and compromised data, the current world situation has increased the need for many networks to improve uptime, whether the threat is malicious attackers or merely twitchy software. E-mail encryption seems to be hard enough, or annoying enough, that even many technically sophisticated people don't do it regularly. Non-technical people rarely seem to be able to figure it out at all. Even though we have a great free implementation of OpenPGP and even though some version of PGP runs on practically any platform, only a miniscule proportion of people use encryption regularly. Usability studies on PGP have had extremely depressing results; Why Johnny Can't Encrypt: A Usability Evaluation of PGP 5.0 is an example. I'm awfully happy with GPG and mutt, but most people sure seem not to be!. Encrypting emails can seem tedious, but it's crucial for protecting sensitive data—recognizing the hurdles to its convenience is important..
