Denver Website Breach: FBI Investigates Hacking Incidents

Denver officials have asked the FBI, Denver police and Microsoft Corp. to help them identify the person or people who have hacked into the city's website twice in the past week.. Dave Joly, an FBI spokesman, confirmed a felony criminal investigation has begun. Conviction of what the FBI terms a "defacement" of the Denver Web page could carry between one and five years in prison, depending on the particulars. Joly said the FBI has not been notified of any other similar attacks on municipal websites in Colorado. The hacker did not get beyond the public Denvergov.org website to access any internal files that may contain sensitive information, but officials want to determine how the website is getting hacked so they can ensure it doesn't happen again, said Eric Brown, a spokesman for Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. "The security system in place is very good and thwarts nearly every attack," Brown said Tuesday. "Last week and last night, someone was able to get through the first layer." Twitter DNS Compromise: Traffic Redirected for Over an Hour

Hackers redirected Twitter.com's traffic to a rogue website for more than an hour last week by accessing its DNS records using an account assigned to Twitter, according to the company that manages Twitter's DNS servers said today.. Twitter initially blamed the hour-long blackout of its site on changes made to the company's DNS records, which act like a telephone directory to match the twitter.com domain name with the IP addresses used by its servers. "Twitter's DNS records were temporarily compromised, but have now been fixed," the company said on its service status page at 2:30 a.m. ET last Friday. "We are looking into the underlying cause and will update with more information soon." The status page has not been revised with more information since then. Twitter uses a New Hampshire firm, Dyn Inc., to manage its DNS records, which match Twitter's domain name (twitter.com, and numerous others) with the IP addresses of its servers. The link for this article located at Tech World is no longer available. . A sudden outage on Instagram lasted for about sixty minutes due to a security loophole in DNS settings, rather than problems with the servers themselves. Investigation is still in progress..
