Debian: DSA-5462-1 Critical: Zenbleed Microcode Info Disclosure

It was discovered that under specific microarchitectural circumstances, a register in "Zen 2" CPUs might not be written to 0 correctly, potentially causing data from another process and/or thread to be stored in the YMM register ( CVE-2023-20593 , also known as Zenbleed). . This vulnerability could result in the exposure of sensitive data. Updated microcode packages that mitigate this flaw are now available for Amd Epyc gen 2 CPUs. Other Zen 2-based CPUs will get their microcode update later when AMD has fixed and validated the microcodes. Given that this bug poses a severe threat to the confidentiality of sensitive information, it is crucial that all impacted users apply the updates issued by Debian , D ebian LTS , Fedora , Mageia , Oracle , Slackware , SUSE and Ubuntu now to prevent potential compromise of their critical data. To stay on top of essential updates released by the open-source programs and applications you use, register as a LinuxSecurity user , subscribe to our Linux Advisory Watch newsletter, and customize your advisories for your distro(s). This will enable you to stay up-to-date on the latest, most significant issues impacting the security of your systems. Follow @LS_Advisories on Twitter for real-time updates on advisories for your distro(s) . . This risk may reveal confidential information. Firmware updates are being deployed promptly to address the concern.. Microcode Update, AMD Security, Zen 2 Threat, Data Exposure, Information Disclosure. . Brittany Day

AMD Boosts Linux Support with Zen 4 and RDNA3 Optimizations

AMD in 2022 continued its open-source/Linux support embrace with offering good launch-day support on both the CPU and GPU sides with their new products, continued ramping up their Linux support on the client side, and has worked more on optimizations and other enhancements to their Linux support. . AMD this year enjoyed good launch-day support for their new Zen 4 processors both with the Ryzen 7000 series and EPYC 9004 "Genoa" server processors, continued making refinements to their Linux laptop SoC support, and capped off the year by having RDNA3 support in place for the Radeon RX 7900 series launch earlier this month. In particular having the RDNA3 support in place going back to Linux 6.0 was pleasant in not requiring Linux Git or the like for launch day support, which had been a requirement for some of the past AMD GPU launches. This year we've seen AMD publish more open-source code not only for their hardware enablement but various user-space libraries and other tooling. And we've seen more fixes from AMD's growing number of Linux engineers this year in going back and providing fixes/optimizations for older products that previously got overlooked or lacked the necessary resources. Among the many patch series volleyed this year by AMD engineers, standing out has been their continued work on the AMD P-State driver and getting that into shape for improved power/efficiency on Linux with that work hopefully culminating in a few months with getting Guided Autonomous Mode and EPP merged. AMD's early work on the Platform Management Framework merged will also be important for next-generation wares. The link for this article located at Phoronix is no longer available. . AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Performance Impact From Retbleed Mitigations

Following the July disclosure of the Retbleed CPU security vulnerability affecting older processors and an AMD change made in August, here is a fresh look at the performance impact of the Retbleed mitigations on Linux, including if opting for the IBPB-based Retbleed mitigation, and the accumulated CPU security mitigation impact for Zen 2 with the flagship Ryzen 9 3950X processor. . Being curious about the Retbleed performance impact for the Ryzen 9 3950X following my earlier Zen 1 testing as well as Intel Skylake testing, I ran some benchmarks looking at the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X in different mitigation states with the latest kernel code. As a reminder, Retbleed on the AMD side affects only Zen 2 CPUs and older -- not current generation Zen 3 or the upcoming Zen 4 processors. The link for this article located at Phoronix is no longer available. . Retbleed is a vulnerability in modern processors such as AMD Ryzen, allowing possible information leakage. AMD's patches, however, may sacrifice performance for enhanced security. Retbleed Mitigation,Ryzen 9 3950X Performance,AMD CPU Security,Zen 2 Mitigation Effects,CPU Threat Evaluations. . Intel, AMD Kernel Update: Retbleed Chip Flaw Resolved in RC 5.19

Linux kernel developers have addressed the Retbleed speculative execution bug in older Intel and AMD silicon, but the fix wasn't straightforward, so emperor penguin Linus Torvalds has delayed delivery of the next version by a week. . "When we've had one of those embargoed [hardware] issues pending, the patches didn't get the open development, and then as a result missed all the usual sanity checking by all the automation build and test infrastructure we have," Torvalds wrote in a post announcing the delivery of release candidate seven for version 5.19 of the kernel. "So no surprise – there's been various small fixup patches afterwards too for some corner cases." . Core OS engineers tackled the Spectre variant vulnerability affecting legacy Intel and AMD processors, implementing patches in the latest beta version..
