Linux Kernel Update: RNDIS Driver Support Risks Security Issues

The next Linux kernel cycle we could see upstream disable their driver support for Microsoft's Remote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS) protocol due to security concerns. . RNDIS is the proprietary protocol used atop USB for virtual Ethernet functionality but its support outside of Microsoft Windows has been mixed. It is not y used in cross-platform environments and due to security concerns the upstream Linux kernel is looking to move the RNDIS kernel drivers behind the "BROKEN" Kconfig option so they effectively become disabled in future kernel builds. Ultimately once marked as "BROKEN" for a while, the drivers will likely be eventually removed from the upstream source tree. The link for this article located at Fudzilla is no longer available. . The Linux kernel might opt to eliminate RNDIS driver compatibility owing to security issues, which could lead to its removal in upcoming versions.. Linux Kernel 5.4 Official Release: exFAT Support And Enhanced Security

Linus Torvalds announced today the general availability of the Linux 5.4 kernel series, a major release that adds numerous new features, stronger security, and updated drivers for better hardware support. Learn more in an informative Softpedia News article: . Linux kernel 5.4 has been in development since early October and received a total of eight Release Candidate milestones, which implemented numerous new features starting with the initial support for Microsoft’s exFAT file system that’s now finally built-in in the kernel to offer users an out-of-the-box experience when connecting exFAT formatted drives. Another major change introduced in Linux kernel 5.4 is the kernel lockdown feature, which is implemented as a Linux Security Module to restrict certain applications from accessing the kernel. It adds a new layer of protection, built in the kernel, to make it possible to run software as it was intended by its creator, thus blocking malicious actors. This driver makes use of some of the HiFn7951 features is still considered beta althought it compiles right for us and worked on tested connections. This driver can manage up to 64 HiFn7951 based cards. It uses the API provided by the cryptolib designed by Martin Gadbois, see http://ww1.colubris.com/en/projects/FreeSWAN/ for details. This driver should work in both 2.2 and 2.4 kernels. The link for this article located at Security Data / Francisco Perez is no longer available. .
