Postini Report Reveals 91% of Emails Classified as Spam Amid Surge

No, you're not imagining things. You have been getting a lot of spam lately. That's because digital miscreants are using contaminated images and stealthy malware to unleash unsolicited email at unprecedented levels, according to new research from San Carlos, Calif.-based Postini Inc. and UK-based Sophos. Attackers use these tactics to hijack computers and turn them into spam relays, often without the user's knowledge. "Bot activity is the major driver here," said Daniel Druker, Postini's executive vice president of marketing. "Bot-infected machines become part of these zombie PC armies that are used to push out spam." . Postini has watched spam levels spike by nearly 60% in the last eight weeks, and Druker said 91% of all email is now spam. Over the past 12 months, the daily volume of spam rose by 120%, he added. Postini monitors 10 million users across 36,000 businesses worldwide. Of that number, the average user gets seven wanted emails a day, while Postini blocks 77 unwanted emails a day. "That's for the average user," he said. "This is an all-time high, and it shows that spammers are increasingly aggressive and sophisticated in their techniques." Malware Tactics: Trojans Build Zombie Networks With Open-Source Techniques

Among the devilish deeds that can be perpetrated by Trojans is the creation of "zombie networks" -- networks typically composed of home computers surreptitiously controlled by a badware's author. Increasing Email Spam Threatens Usability of E-mail Services

The spam flood is rising, contributing to a reduction in the usefulness of e-mail, a market research firm said Wednesday. The spam flood is rising, contributing to a reduction in the usefulness of e-mail, a market research firm said Wednesday. Unsolicited e-mail from con artists, virus writers and advertisers accounts for 38 percent of the 31 billion e-mails sent each day in North America this year, up from 24 percent in 2002, International Data Corp., said in a report on web mail and spam. In addition, Internet service providers and makers of anti-spam products report that spam represents from 50 percent to 95 percent of all inbound Internet e-mail, IDC said. That's triple the 15 percent to 30 percent levels reported two years ago. The growing spam avalanche has contributed to a reduction in the usefulness of e-mail. Other factors include the increasing cost of storing and managing e-mail and the growing use of instant messaging. The number of spam sent on an average day is 11 billion, compared with 4.5 billion in 2002, IDC said. In comparison, the number of person-to-person emails currently sent each day and in 2002 is 12 billion and 10.5 billion, respectively. Despite these sobering numbers, filtering tools are improving and doing a better job at intercepting spam before it reaches the inboxes of businesses and consumers, IDC analyst Mark Levitt said. Those tools include desktop software, appliances attached to corporate networks and e-mail filtering offered by service providers. AOL Launches $47K Porsche Raffle to Combat Email Spam Issue

Just a cute story for those who hate spam. . . .. As a nice publicity adjunct to its ongoing war against spam, AOL is holding a raffle to offload a $47,000 Porsche Boxster S which it seized last year as part of a settlement against an unnamed spammer. When we finished, he started checking his other messages. All of a sudden, there was DeeDee, a voluptuous vixen in a plunging red tank top and Daisy Duke shorts, smiling sheepishly from the computer screen. I stared at her for a moment, then at my son. He blanched and raised his hands as if he were in a stickup. "I swear! I don't even know the woman!" he said, in Clintonesque denial. There was a tense second or two, until I remembered that the same thing had happened to me countless times when I was innocently checking my e-mail. Spam has become so bad in the US that even advertisers have admitted that restrictions are needed. The Direct Marketing Association (DMA), which once opposed any federal anti-spam legislation, says it will now lobby for federal and state laws to control the growth of million-message batches of emails. A daily flood of spam vexes consumers and internet service providers (ISPs) alike, whose attempts to block it are circumvented by stealthy emailing technology, says the DMA, which has 4,700 members. Jerry Cerasale, the DMA's vice president for government affairs, told Reuters that the sheer volume would swamp the medium, rendering it useless.
