IBM said this week it will soon roll out an AI-infused, hybrid-cloud oriented version of its z/OS mainframe operating system. . Expected in the third quarter, z/OS 3.1 will support technologies intended to enable deployment of AI workloads co-located with z/OS applications, IBM said in a customer preview letter. The new OS will work best with the newest version of the Big Iron, the z16, but it will support z14 models and above, IBM says. The z16 includes an AI accelerator built onto its core Telum processor that can do 300 billion deep-learning inferences per day with one millisecond latency and includes what IBM calls a quantum-safe system to protect organizations from anticipated quantum-based security threats. . Anticipated for release in Q3, z/OS 3.1 is set to incorporate features that facilitate the implementation of AI operations.. Microsoft upgraded its Windows Admin Center, with a focus on protecting the vendor's Azure Stack hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) service from outside threats. . The latest features include default admin policies to push back against lateral network attacks, network segmentation, and support for managing clusters that include the Kerberos network authentication protocol. Azure Stack HCI clusters host both virtualized Windows and Linux workloads, plus storage, in a hybrid cloud environment that includes on-premises infrastructure and Azure cloud services. Microsoft introduced Azure Stack 2017 as its response to the rise of hyperconverged infrastructure. It has since evolved to become Redmond's hybrid cloud contender and competes with efforts from Amazon Web Services (Outposts) and Google Cloud (Anthos, now part of the Google Distributed Cloud portfolio). . Recent enhancements shield Azure Stack HCI through network isolation and administrative protocols, safeguarding against lateral movement threats.. Red Hat announced an expansion of its open solutions publicly available in AWS Marketplace, a digital catalogue with thousands of software listings from independent software vendors that are focused on making it easy to find, test, buy and deploy software that runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS). . Furthering Red Hat's commitment to customer choice and flexibility across the open hybrid cloud, customers can now use committed AWS spend to purchase and run Red Hat offerings directly through AWS Marketplace. The company has expanded the public availability of its open hybrid cloud technologies in AWS Marketplace. Any organisation seeking to build an open foundation on the cloud can now turn to solutions delivered directly by Red Hat. . Where does Red Hat go from here? Here's what Matt Hicks, CEO, and Paul Cormier, the chairman, have to say. According to Hicks, "We'll continue to invest a lot in security. That was the foundation that Red Hat was built on. That you can get open-source innovation and deploy it with trust. Nothing has changed with that other than we certainly secure a lot more software today." . In its latest quarter, IBM saw its hybrid-cloud revenue jump 18% to $5.9 billion. Along with this, IBM saw its highest sales growth in a decade. Much of that is due to its stand-alone Red Hat division. True, Red Hat sales increased by "only" 12%, which is low by Red Hat standards but darn good by any other standard. So what will Red Hat do now that it has a new CEO , Matt Hicks, and chairman, Paul Cormier? The answer: Stay the course. In an interview, Hicks, who's been with Red Hat since 2006, said, "[We'll keep using] the same core fundamentals that we built 20-plus years ago." Why? Because the combination of Linux, open-source software, and top support, "continues to play in new markets, whether that's the shift to cloud and cloud services or to edge computing. In the next couple of quarters. we'll just focus on executing. There's great momentum right now around the open hybrid cloud." . Microsoft's cloud division saw a 22% increase this quarter, totaling $7.4 billion, as Azure's fresh management focuses on growth.. Red Hat Leadership, Cloud Innovations, Open Source Growth. . SUSE's acquisition of open-source Kubernetes startup Rancher Labs closed earlier this month - and this decision could very well make the German company behind the SUSE Linux distro the hybrid cloud company to watch in 2021. . SUSE is about a year older than Red Hat. At the turn of the century, it was considered the Cadillac of Linux distros, but the company has been playing catch-up for much of this century, struggling under a series of corporate owners who did little to help it prosper. In 2018, however, after it gained independence via acquisition by the Stockholm-based private equity investor EQT Partners -- just months before Red Hat lost its independence by selling to IBM -- things started turning around for SUSE. It's been redefining itself in an apparent effort to differentiate from competitors, primarily from Red Hat, a fellow enterprise Linux distro giant, but also from VMware and the big public clouds. IBM is intensifying Linux security and privacy, and has reshaped the mainframe with an eye toward further integrating it within hybrid clouds and further securing Linux-based workloads. . On the hardware side, IBM rolled out two entry-level, 19” single-frame, air-cooled platforms, the z15 Model T02 and LinuxONE III Model LT2. The new machines are extensions of the IBM z15 family that Big Blue rolled out in September of last year. Both can fit in cloud data-center racks and can be outfitted with a second drawer, should customers need to grow capacity. Both feature 65 cores using commercial processors running at 4.5GHz and can be configured to support all manner of workloads. . The term hybrid cloud is used loosely, which is probably why so many companies say they're planning to adopt it. If you’re planning a hybrid cloud strategy, the security questions you need to think about may not be the ones you’d expect. Hybrid cloud is IT’s flavor of the year. The C-level executives in Avanade’s global Hybrid Cloud study are particularly optimistic: 75 percent believe it should be the main area of focus for their company this year; 72 percent expect to adopt hybrid cloud by 2018; and 76 percent expect the majority of their applications and services – including some critical systems like data and analytics, office applications and customer-facing services – will be running in a hybrid cloud environment within three years. . .
