PlayStation Network Security Incident: Developer Insights on Consumer Trust

With the details of 77 million customers involved, the PlayStation Network hack is one of the largest ever malicious attacks on a commercial network. Although Sony is assuring gamers that the network is being strengthened, the hack has once again raised questions about the security of online transactions.. Amid the firestorm, industry reactions were mixed with many developers expressing frustration at the attack and its possible consequences, rather than anger at Sony. Ste Curran, creative director at the Brighton-based studio Zoe Mode, told Develop Magazine: "From my perspective, the bigger issue is not about PSN, but confidence in digital distribution generally. For every story like this that breaks in the mainstream press, consumer confidence about their details being safe is eroded. Confidence [in online transactions] has been building up, and I think will continue to, but this is a blip. It could be a little step back." Exploring SSL Risks to E-Commerce Security at Black Hat Conference

Lots of code excitement will spring from the Black Hat hacker conference this week, but already a huge controversy is erupting: Black Hat's founder thinks SSL--the security code making much of online commerce safe--is broken.. SSL, Secure Sockets Layer (and its successor Transport Layer Security) is a Net-based security protocol that ensures communications between computers is safe and unhackable--essentially so that no one can "listen in." It works like this: A server and computer connect together and say hello, digitally. This bit is unsecured. The two machines exchange a "key" which unlocks a private line that only they can communicate on. These private exchanges are the basis of safe e-shopping, including credit card transactions. On the server side the site's owners can be certain they're speaking to a genuine customer, who's data can be trusted (to an extent).. Exploring The Impact Of Diffie-Hellman On Internet Transactions Security

In the 1970s, Martin Hellman and Whitfield Diffie wrote the recipe for one of today's most widely used security algorithms in a paper called "New Directions in Cryptography. The paper mapped out the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, a major advancement in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology that allows for secure online transactions and is used in such popular protocols as the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Secure Shell (SSH). In 2000, they received the prestigious Marconi Foundation award for their contributions. . With the world increasingly dependent on the Internet for commerce and a financially-motivated underground of malcode writers working overtime to exploit its weaknesses, there's been plenty of debate over how cryptography must evolve to meet new threats. In this two-part feature, Diffie and Hellman discuss the threats that concern them most and where they think the technology they helped advance is headed. IT . . . . Privacy efforts are intended to project an image of trust to consumers worried about the loss of their privacy, to dissuade lawmakers from tightening regulations, to prevent costly courtroom battles, and to avoid public relations nightmares while encouraging online transactions. IT data privacy efforts are being stepped up in the financial services and health care fields, which are being prodded by new laws. Net companies have plenty of incentive to regulate themselves now rather than wait to see what will emerge from the scores of privacy-related bills that have been introduced in both Congress and state legislatures. Companies doing business online would pay from $9 billion to $36 billion modifying their Web sites to comply with proposed privacy laws, according to a study released May 8 which was underwritten by the Association for Competitive Technology, a Washington-based lobbying organization backed by Microsoft. Encrypting data that passes over the Internet from customers to e-commerce sites is a good thing. But it's not necessarily enough. In fact, personal data used in online transactions is often encrypted at the least significant time. Virtually all cases of credit card theft happen when a malicious hacker gains access to an e-commerce site's server, and is then able to access the database that contains customer information -- which by then is often unencrypted and exposed. Some businesses are expressing concern that the ESign Act, the new law that gives electronic signatures the same legal weight as written ones, is creating obstacles to e-business as well as affecting Web site design. And they're asking federal officials to make some changes to it. The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, or ESign, became law in October (see story), but a provision in the legislation required the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce to investigate the burdens and benefits of the law's consumer consent provisions and report back to Congress. The two agencies will hold a workshop on Tuesday to examine the issue (see story). John Buchman, general counsel at Arlington, Va.-based ETrade Bank, a subsidiary of ETrade Group Inc., said the main problem with the ESign legislation is the underlying premise that businesses are disinclined to protect consumers.
