AMD Dynamic Boost Control Enhancements For Ryzen SoCs on Linux

Since early this year AMD has been working on Linux enablement patches for Dynamic Boost Control (DBC). This is a new feature of some AMD SoCs that allow an "authenticated entity" to have greater control over certain SoC characteristics to improve the power/performance. AMD DBC was merged for Linux 6.6 just days ago while already new patches have been posted that extend the supported platforms for this Dynamic Boost Control functionality. . AMD Dynamic Boost Control is interesting for enhancing the power/performance tuning of Ryzen SoCs but its integration around the PSP/CCP for security to ensure "authenticated entities" control it may rub some Linux/open-source enthusiasts the wrong way. Besides a basic sample script for user-space, we haven't yet seen how widespread or robust OEMs/ODMs will leverage this new functionality. There hasn't been much public information yet on this AMD Dynamic Boost Control functionality in general. While the AMD DBC support was just merged to the mainline Linux kernel days ago, already a new patch series is providing "new" platform support for DBC. This new platform coverage is for unnamed platforms that support this hardware feature via a different mailbox than the platform access mailbox initially enabled as part of the original DBC patches. AMD Boosts Linux Support with Zen 4 and RDNA3 Optimizations

AMD in 2022 continued its open-source/Linux support embrace with offering good launch-day support on both the CPU and GPU sides with their new products, continued ramping up their Linux support on the client side, and has worked more on optimizations and other enhancements to their Linux support. . AMD this year enjoyed good launch-day support for their new Zen 4 processors both with the Ryzen 7000 series and EPYC 9004 "Genoa" server processors, continued making refinements to their Linux laptop SoC support, and capped off the year by having RDNA3 support in place for the Radeon RX 7900 series launch earlier this month. In particular having the RDNA3 support in place going back to Linux 6.0 was pleasant in not requiring Linux Git or the like for launch day support, which had been a requirement for some of the past AMD GPU launches. This year we've seen AMD publish more open-source code not only for their hardware enablement but various user-space libraries and other tooling. And we've seen more fixes from AMD's growing number of Linux engineers this year in going back and providing fixes/optimizations for older products that previously got overlooked or lacked the necessary resources. Among the many patch series volleyed this year by AMD engineers, standing out has been their continued work on the AMD P-State driver and getting that into shape for improved power/efficiency on Linux with that work hopefully culminating in a few months with getting Guided Autonomous Mode and EPP merged. AMD's early work on the Platform Management Framework merged will also be important for next-generation wares. The link for this article located at Phoronix is no longer available. . Chrome OS Soon To Support Linux Programs Via Terminal App

Soon, Chromebooks might be able to run Linux programs. That possibility already was hinted at last February but might be coming really soon with the appearance of the Terminal app in Chrome OS’ dev channel.. It almost feels ironic that Linux support is still coming to the Linux-based Chrome OS. But like with Android, which also uses the Linux kernel, Google has modified it so much that there is very little semblance to Linux. Coming full circle, Chrome OS could soon run Linux software somewhat directly, opening the OS and Chromebooks to use cases beyond education or enterprise. Exploring PS3 Linux Support: User Hacks And Firmware Challenges

It's not clear why Linux fans would even want to run it on a PS3, "when a console is NOTHING but 'DRM... in a box'" says Slashdot blogger hairyfeet. "Even when [Sony] allowed Linux you didn't get access to the full machine -- no GPU access -- which left it an underpowered POWER based PC.". Never get between a geek and a processor" would be an excellent maxim for tech companies to live by, but it's one that gets ignored again and again. Take Sony's (NYSE: SNE) latest misguided move. Not only is it what inspired Montreal consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack to utter those sage words, but it's also what has now prompted George Hotz -- author of the original hack into the PS3 -- to vow he'll craft yet another hack to get around its latest firmware update. "A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support Learn how SugarCRM will improve your business. Free Trial. Click here., DO NOT UPDATE," Hotz wrote in a follow-up post last week. "I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher." Apparently addressing Sony, Hotz added, "I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play... " In the meantime, "my investigation into 3.21 has begun," he wrote. PlayStation 3 Firmware Update: Other OS Disabled Over Security Issues

Sony has announced that its latest firmware update will disable the "Other OS" option on the PS3. This means that the PS3 will no longer support the Linux OS.. The decision to drop the Other OS option ultimately comes down to security, according to Sony. Noted PS3 hacker George Hotz released an exploit last month that allowed read/write access to the PS3 through Linux and the Other OS option. Sony estimates that only a small percentage of PS3 owners use the Other OS option, but the Playstation Blog is being overrun by complaints by fans who hope this is just an April Fools prank by Sony. The post on the update at the Playstation Blog has this to say as a rebuttal. "For most of you, this won The link for this article located at The Examiner is no longer available. . ZeroKnowledge Ends Linux Support For Freedom Internet Privacy Suite

ZeroKnowledge, producers of the Freedom Internet Privacy Suite, a package of software that provided a personal firewall, blocked cookies and banner ads, locally stored and encrypted website login information, and scanned outgoing data to ensure personal information wasn't being sent out . . . . ZeroKnowledge, producers of the Freedom Internet Privacy Suite, a package of software that provided a personal firewall, blocked cookies and banner ads, locally stored and encrypted website login information, and scanned outgoing data to ensure personal information wasn't being sent out against a user's wishes, has announced that they're discontinuing Linux support due to low interest in their Linux offerings and a "strong customer preference" for Windows. It also appears (though company spokesmen didn't answer definitively as we prepared this for posting) that the change in availability may also signal a move away from the open source availability of the product. From the company's release notes on Freedom 2.2: "Due to strong customer preference for the Windows platform, there will be no further releases of Freedom for Linux. Current Linux Standard Features users can continue using the latest version available for Linux (2.1) for free for a limited time. During this period, we encourage you to purchase the Freedom Internet Privacy Suite Standard Features or Premium Services for a supported platform if you wish to continue using Freedom in the future. Freedom is no longer available freely for re-download. In addition, Linux users can no longer purchase Freedom. As a result, you will be unable to use Freedom unless you upgrade your operating system to Windows 98, 2000, or ME. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may cause. Freedom is no longer available for free. Your order confirmation number will be required to access the re-download page. Additionally, Freedom for Linux can no longer be purchased from our web site. Users that previously used the free Linux version will need to purchase Freedom and upgradetheir operating system to Windows 98, 2000, or ME should they need to re-download the installer. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may cause." . CryptoSafe halts Windows compatibility for SecureNet Privacy Toolkit due to minimal user engagement..
