The "xmlXPtrEvalXPtrPart()" function in xpointer.c contains an off-by-one error.
Resolution
All libxml2 users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=dev-libs/libxml2-2.8.0_rc1"
