While firewall vendors espouse the virtues or their security solutions, others believe that even the most technologically advanced firewall can't offer companies all of the protection they need to ensure that data is safe from both external and internal threats. Increasingly complex security scenarios, incorrect configurations, and ever-growing security threats all contribute to the firewall's inability to be a total security solution, says Bruce Schneier, chief technology officer of Counterpane Internet Security Inc., a San Jose, Calif. company that provides network-monitoring and penetration-detection services.

    "Companies think that if they have a firewall, they're safe, but they aren't a panacea," Schneier says.
