A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by civil liberties groups who claimed that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) was planning to use the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to keep a Princeton University professor from publishing research on security flaws in music industry anti-piracy software.

The judge dismissed the case, filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and several other groups, that asked the court to rule that the DMCA - which establishes civil and criminal penalties for people charged with violating copyrights online - cannot be used to chill the release of scientific research.

The groups also had planned to ask the judge to rule that several parts of DMCA were unconstitutional.
